and sometimes it doesn't. having lived in a college residence
hall for seven years or so i had some "interesting" roommates.
i'm sure i'm also on some their lists too.

i'm still on good terms with my first college roomie from all
those years ago, we keep in touch a few times a year and get
caught up.

Not in my experience. Most co-tenants are just ships that pass in the
night.
In UK it's common for groups of students to share a privately rented
house or apartment. Some are strangers who become friends; some are
friends whose personal habits turn out to be hell to live with, and
sometimes they just remain a person you don't know very well who just
lives in the same house without ever becoming a friend or falling out.
I've encountered all of those. Of all my student housemates, only one of
them became a close lifelong friend.

"If they work out" is the operative phrase. If they don't, you're stuck
in a lease living with said "strangers". I do't know any adults who
actually choose to live like they're in a college dorm (other than
Kuthe). Don't you have 2 bedrooms in your apartment? Why don't you
rent a room to a stranger?

In most instances, the landlord doesn't also live there, looking over
your shoulder trying to insinuate their way into your life.

There are times when married couples don't enjoy shared living. LOL
I love my wife but not so much when she leaves dirty dishes in the
sink... to me even one dirty teaspoon left in the sink is like an
unflushed toilet. I never say anything, I just wash it and put it
away. I don't think a day has ever passed that I don't wash her
teacups. I handwash her bras too when she leaves them hanging on the
bedroom doorknob all day, thing is she never notices. Some things are
not worth making an issue of. No man should ever complain about a
woman's undies strewn about, they are purposely left as enticements.

I had no problem living in close quarters on a ship for years, no one
had much personal space, and there were daily inspections.

What does this have to do with someone renting shared living space with
strangers?

Everything... has to do with living with slobs. Most times shared
living space doesn't work, everyone's idea of slovenliness is
different. I strongly suspect that you live alone because
most people you know are slobs. My wife and I can live together
because we are both neat freaks, actually I'm much neater with kitchen
stuff and she knows to stay out of MY kitchen. I do ALL the cooking
including preparing the coffee... I never touch her tea pot. The only
cooking she does is using the toaster. In all our years together
she's never once made coffee, she only makes tea... and I don't know
if it's good, I don't drink pond water.

It could happen someday if I ever want a housemate.
Why are you so against strangers? The world is full of them.

Every single person I've ever known - friends, relatives, girlfriends
started out as strangers.

Heck, even the moment I was born, I looked up at my Mom and thought,
"Who the hell is this?" lol

Actually you have posted about it - several times.
You have all the good toys.

Here's a question for you: You've mentioned that you have a swimming
pool. If you ever move, would you want a house with a swimming pool again?

I've known many customers with pools and all have told me that they
wouldn't want another one...more trouble than they're worth.

The house that is two houses down from the one my son is buying has an in
ground pool. Everyone I know who has one loves it.

We have an outdoor pool. It's almost like having a high maintenance

Opinions vary.
I've enjoyed the use of other's pools at times but never wanted one
myself. My son is glad not to have one any more and he owns a pool care
business.

Obviously your son is well aware of the expense and problems that go
hand in hand with owning a pool.

There was a pool here when we moved in. It was an issue when it came to
price. The owner thought the place was worth more because it had a pool.
I kept telling them I didn't want a pool.

I kept the pool for a few years. It was a pain in the ass. It was a lot
of work and a lot of expense. We found a great way to get rid of it. The
principal of my wife's school was looking for a pool. The guy had 10
adopted kids. I offered the pool to him. He had come and disassemble it,
move it and put it back together. He probably had to buy a new liner.

I don't think he'd be able to afford one for quite a while. He just noticed the pool,
and thought it was cool. One big expense is a huge increase in homeowner's
insurance.

Absolutely an increase in his homeowner's insurance. That along with
required fencing because you never know when some curious neighborhood
kids who are attracted to a pool in the heat of summer might wander in.
It's got to be secure. Not to mention the cost of the algae retardent
chemicals, cleaning the filters, constantly skimming the pool for
falling leaves. Then draining and covering the pool when winter rolls
around. It's a lot of work. Might look like fun in the Summer until he
gets down to the constant maintenance only to find it's only being used
a few months out of the year.

A cheesy above ground pool isn't worth much, but an in ground is another
story. My older sister (I think about 15-16 years older) got married young,
not much out of high school, to a guy a few years older who was already
an apprentice union electrician. They bought a house right away, and
within a few years, they had a nice pool put in. All summer long they used
it. Even though my mother moved to the next block when I was in 5th
grade, and my asshole father didn't move with us, I only went over there
when there was a family occasion, because that sister and I never got
along from the time I was five years old.

I can't imagine a pool being anything but a joy if one can easily afford it,
but it is expensive. I *can* imagine my son buying a hot tub. He's loved
those since he was a toddler. If the hotel had a hot tub, he and his
mother always took advantage of it.

My son has more immediate goals. The house was cheap because it
hadn't been updated since the 1950s. Look at this kitchen:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/361781...57718201231971
Sure, it's usable, but it doesn't even have a place for a built in
dishwasher. He's fine with doing dishes by hand because he's a young,
single guy who doesn't cook much, but when he remodels the kitchen
he'll need to put in a dishwasher, and there are plenty of other projects
he'll want to do before the kitchen.

For one thing, the bathroom is pink. It's a nice pink, and in good
condition, and perhaps it will grow on him, but at 19 it clashes with
his masculine sensibilities. Even with that, he'll do the more
immediate work first. The garage is integrated into the house. It's
split level, and has the garage underneath the bathroom and a large
front bedroom where he can put his workout equipment, and a small
bedroom that is perfect for a home office. The other three tiers have
a basement large enough for a pool table, which is high priority for
him. Above that is the living room, dining room and kitchen, and the
highest floor has a giant master bedroom.

Before he does anything expensive, he will have to pay back us for
the down payment, which will be 20%. The only thing we're *giving*
him is a move-in present of a high quality Speed Queen frontloader
and a more moderately priced, mismatched dryer. Maybe in a few
years, when he gets around to gutting the kitchen, we'll surprise him
with a nice Miele dishwasher. We love ours.

But it's worth it when he gets nearly naked 65 year old babes like

Costs a whole lot less for a nicer and much better maintained pool
along with all the acouterments (showers, steamroom, sauna, gym, etc.)
by joining the local Y and the membership is a tax write off as part
of your medical expense (Silver Sneakers) membership is ~50/month.
Pools are typically indoors, some facilities have indoor and outdoor
pools. There are lifeguards and also instructors for water aerobics
classes, some teach SCUBA. The one here has an indoor ice skating
rink.

That's nice for you, Sheldon. Bryan's son isn't a member of AARP, I
doubt he's looking for medical tax write-offs at his age, either.

Heck, even I'm not a member of AARP. The discounts you get are
mostly redundant if you already have a AAA membership, and while
I may be old, I'm almost 5 years from being retired, barring a
death that I would see as tragic rather than fortunate. My wife's
parents have money, but I love them both dearly. One of the joys
of my, and especially my wife's life, is bringing them lovingly made
food.

My wife made this today for their dinner:

https://www.blossomtostem.net/corn-j...potato-bisque/

I don't like sweet potatoes, but if any of you do, this turned
out great. Her parents agreed.

Neither am I. There are absolutely no discounts from AARP that I'm
interested in. I don't need discount hotel or travel rates.

Apparently Sheldon thinks your son should join the YMCA. He can learn
to SCUBA dive. Lots of that going on in Saint Louis, right? LOL Ditto
ice skating at the local Y.

My car insurance covers everything AAA offers.

I kind of get the idea of the soup and it's not unappealing. The
constant ad interruptions in the middle of the soup recipe were annoying.

We don't take the tax write off because we don't use the facility
often enough to qualify. However the pool is very nice and well
maintained. Having ones own pool at home is a major expence and
doesn't pay in a cold climate yet people here do have outdoor pools,
they close them down for winter. Because of all the shark sightings
more people have put pools in at home. Before my wife had her knee
replacement surgery she took the water aerobics classes, helped some
but eventually she needed the surgery.

You need to read for context... I only mentioned the pool at the Y as
much less expensive alternative to a pool at home.

We like sweet potatoes but only oven baked, whole, until the flesh
firms and skin crisps. Sweet potato soup is similar to butternut
squash soup... textures are puke city.
As a kid we would buy baked sweet potatoes and chestnuts in winter
from street venders, they'd come by with a push cart and wood fired
oven. The hot sweet potatoes went into coat pockets, made for great
hand warmers in winter. Neither of us likes creamed soups, reminds us
of the Soup Nazi. We don't like creamy white potato soup either, we
like peeled and diced red skinned potatoes minimally cooked in chicken
stock til just tender. I don't own a stick blender, I've no use for
one.
I do make summer squash soup, more a stew of different summer squash
in chunks, with some carrots, celery, eggplant, and roma tomatoes. I
did post pictures of it a while ago but I'd need to search for it now.
Most of my pictures are not titled, they are in dated folders, about
every thirty pictures I begin a new folder. If I come across it I
will post it, but could be from several years ago.
