The very first were the people working in long term care facilities, mostly people of colour, like Fillippino and Caribbean women. Next were native people in remote communities. The official reason for the later was that they have limited access to health care in their remote communities. I heard a news story the other day where they were so happy to have vaccinated 700 elders in a remote first nation community. I had to really question that one because they had no infections at all in that community. None. Meanwhile, there are hot spots with rising rates who desperately need the vaccine. The reason I question the demographics is that a couple weeks ago I heard a person of colour complaining about how vaccines are usually developed by white Europeans and tested on people of colour. The suggestion was that if it had serious side effects or lacked effectiveness it would affect those people of colour and white people would get the new and improved version. Then they started with the vaccination program and, sure enough... people of colour. Sometimes you just can't win. |

As for testing, they accepted many types and ages. People working in the nursing homes were also responsible for much of the spread so getting them done first should be a priority. Of course you can read the color factor into that. As for the 700 in a first nation community, if there was an infection I imagine it would be more devastating than in the cities. |

Maybe I should have written that the other way around. I should have started with the complaint about White Europeans making vaccines and testing them on people of colour. I don't object to those front line workers getting the vaccine. It seems that their working in low paying jobs leads to them living, working and commuting in close contact with others, and if they get infected they will pass it on to the more susceptible residents of the old folks homes. I do question the motive for that particular native community. We are almost a year into this pandemic and they have not had a single case. There are other areas that are much more in need of the vaccine, |
