I wonder how many Americans NEVER go to a restaurant.

I will guess that most smart Americans don't go to a
restaurant currently. Not eat-in or even take-out.

Before the virus mess, I would never eat in a restaurant
by myself. That was a bit weird to me.

I did do many takeouts...and not just fast food, but I
won't for the foreseeable future.

Safer to cook at home even with my "crappy RevereWare."

Why? You don't contract COVID-19 through food.

And never eating in a restaurant by yourself is a bit weird to me.

Don't stick the take-out food up your nose and you'll be fine.

You still get near other people. Other people are bad news at the
moment.

I don't find it weird if other people do it, but I've never done it
myself.

Take-out.

I haven't eaten in a restaurant since March, but a lot of my favorite
ethnic spots are doing a brisk take-out business. We've been rotating
among Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Tibetan, and German. There's a little
Middle Eastern spot near my office that I should add to the mix.

And when I'm busy cranking out a release, I usually get a sandwich
delivered at least once during the release cycle.

This diverges somewhat from our discussion of high-end restaurants,
but we had already drifted away from hot German potato salad anyhow.

We have to drive 25 minutes for takeout. And 25 back of course. Across
roads with bad potholes and wildlife, especially from dusk till dawn.
If we lived in town, then yes, take-out and delivery.

Fair enough. But Gary wouldn't have to go anywhere near 25 miles. He
probably could get a bunch of different things delivered.

I live just far enough outside town that deliveries are problematic. I
can get a pizza or lousy Chinese food, but if I want something decent
I have to get in the car.

our favorite chinese place is 35 minute drive from here.
we've had it once since late winter, we did take-out but
they do have dining open at restricted seating. we're
both happy with the take out, but the amount of packaging
involved makes me cringe. i won't be doing it often.

Why would you never eat in a restaurant by yourself? What's weird about
eating alone? Are you afraid people will point and talk about you if you
don't have a dining partner?

Well I've heard from wait staff that frowns on single diners.
tips are lower for a table of one on your station.

Regardless... How boring to sit at a table by yourself to eat?
I don't do that at home either. YAWN!

I'd rather sit in front of a tv to eat and I do that all the
time.

Who gives a shit? I'm not there to make them smile. I'm a very
easy table and I tip a minimum 20% for anything but terrible
service.

Really? You've heard that? I've 'heard' that a table full of diners leave a lower tip.
So, it just depends on how many cheapskates are at that table. When dining
alone or with a group, I tip according to my meal and I can't help what the others
tip or do not tip the wait staff. Having a table full of diners does not ensure a
large tip.

I'm never bored when dining alone; I don't need someone to entertain me with
conversation when I'm eating although it is nice when out in a group. Although
there are hundreds like you that need entertainment; face stuck in their phones
from the moment they sit down.

Indeed. We haven't eaten out since late February.

You need to get out more often, too. Maybe you and Gary can hold hands
and comfort each other when you next visit a restaurant.

I don't get this squeamishness for eating alone in a restaurant. Are y'all
terrified someone is going to look at you? Or embarrassed to be alone
at a restaurant? Do you think the world will view you as losers since you
don't have a dining partner?

Smart Americans. Or smart Australians. Covid, you know?

Covid? Or do you mean that's all exaggerated?

None of the above. I'd just enjoy it less on my own. I've also never
gone on a holiday on my own. Good for other people if they have and
liked it.

What? You don't wear a mask? You know that protects you from Covid-19,
AIDS, black-water fever, mumps, hangnails, and lightning strikes.

Some restaurants here are open but limited seating with tables few and
far apart. All waitstaff are wearing masks and no condiments of any
sort are on the table. Limited menus as well.

I've never vacationed on my own but enjoying a quiet meal by myself is
nice, at least it is to me. Some people act like a meal on their own
is tantamount to eating in public while nude.

Staying away from other people is the best prevention. If that means I
can't eat out, I can live with that. We see more kangaroos than people
anyway, covid or no covid.

Australian covid clusters are often centered around bars and hotels.
We avoid hospitality altogether.

Perhaps you need to say home more often, Joan.
It's a dangerous world out there currently.
Besides, I'm very outdoor active most every morning.
Just avoid restaurants for now. That's all.

I should maybe clarify... When I said that eating alone in a
restaurant is a bit weird to me, I wasn't saying it's weird
for others to do that. Just weird for ME to do that. It's a
personal thing. No need to get your feathers ruffled and get
defensive.

Time for you to call women who have dined out alone without feeling
uncomfortable "princesses".

Only 2 princesses here. Julie that admits it and you that denies
it.
Remind me to send you a pea for your mattress next christmas.

As far a dining out alone in a restaurant, I'm not surprised that
you and Joan do it. That's your only choice.

Did I say I was at a restaurant daily or weekly? No. I was commenting on
your ridiculous statement "I will guess that most smart Americans don't go
to a restaurant currently. Not eat-in or even take-out."

How do you think many of these restaurants are barely hanging on with their
fingernails? Psst: It's called take out and delivery. There some restaurants
open but with a limited menu and very limited seating. But pandemic or not,
you don't frequent restaurants.

I understood you perfectly the first time. You're scared to eat alone in
a restaurant as someone might look at you and wonder if you're a loser is
why you don't have a dining companion.

Who's feathers are ruffle and who's defensive? Not I.

You're speculating and gossiping again, Joan. That guess
came from your own mind. Is that how you feel? Why so hostile
here often?

I just won't sit alone to eat in a restaurant or even at
home. It's boring.
My dining room table is only for when others are here.

If I buy something when I'm out and not going right home
I like to sit alone in my van and eat. Different strokes...

Before I'd eat alone in a restaurant I'd do take out.

I've never had a problem dining out by myself. Sometimes the
establishment thought it was odd. I remember one time on a lunch break
I went to a small bistro. I'd been there before with co-workers but
this time I was alone. The hostess saw a couple standing behind me and
assumed we were together. "Three?" "No, one." ONE? Yes. A table for
one. Got a problem with that?

I brought a book with me. They had a wonderful lunch special that day:
beef tournedos/tenderolin with a magnificent sauce. That beef was fork
tender and delicious.

I never did understand why she thought my dining alone was odd.

LOL My Revereware isn't crappy, either. Guess we're just lucky that way.

I wanted to try a new restaurant one evening but was refused even though
it was barely half full.
I never went there after that.
