I got tired of watching episodes of 'Victoria' on PBS and didn't want to
start reading a new book. I decided to bake some cornbread instead.

Isn't it nice to see good acting and also a show that doesn't start each
episode with a gruesome murder?

Thanks for the bulletin! They've been airing the previous episodes here but since
I've already seen them I didn't tune in. Not really wild about how Albert is
being portrayed; 'Marilyn Monroe' and breathy/breathless. But I enjoyed the series but not one of their better ones.

Where is "Home Fires"?

Where is "The Crimson Fields"?

Victoria, The Crown, and Midsomer Murders are commercial productions,
not made or broadcast by the BBC.

BBC is only one of numerous British TV producers and broadcasters. The
others are independent, commercial companies funded by advertisers sales
and investors.

Does it really matter? The point is quality programming. Good writing,
good acting and - for me - the costumes! It's nice to be able to see
these shows in my little corner of the southern US.

If UK commercial companies (funded by selling advertising time)
produce quality programming with good acting etc.... why doesn't the
USA?

Because they think the American public is dumber than a box of rocks and can't
maintain an attention span longer than 30 minutes. They think if it's not
anything any better than stupid comedy shows, reality and competition as well as 'talent' shows then we won't sit still to watch.

It does. It's not to Jill's taste, but there's lots of good stuff. A
lot of it comes out on premium cable channels, but there's some on
broadcast television.

How the heck should I know? I don't work in the entertainment industry.
I am not an actor or someone who produces television shows. There are
some really good quality shows on American PBS. I just happen to enjoy
some of the dramatic shows produced in the the UK. I have no idea why
you have a problem with that.

I defrosted one zip-loc of sliced fresh ham yesterday for dinner
(sandwiches), I still have plenty left to go with that cornbread...
fresh ham goes well with white gravy and cornbread, but alas I have
none, don't have any cornmeal either. I was planning to use that
roast ham in a Chinese soup. Anyway your corn bread looks good.

What kinda skilet?

I'm currently trying to remove all the caked-on residue from a Wagner
"0" 10" (bottom) skillet.

About half done. I'm using a 3M "paint and rust stripper" on a DeWalt
battery drill motor to get the pan down to bare metal.

That was my Lodge 9" cast iron skillet which has been dedicated to
cornbread since I bought and seasoned using <gasp> Crisco at least 15
years ago. I still melt a little of that partially-hydrogenized
stuff in the bottom of the very hot skillet from time to time to keep it
non-stick. I drain it off, of course.

I use soften butter in the actual cornbread batter.

Cornbread is great with bean dishes. I'm planning to make some spicy
bean soup to serve with it. I do love cornbread!

I never remember to buy buttermilk. I do the cheat thing and add a
splash of white vinegar to milk to curdle it. Now I have to add white
vinegar to my shopping list.

Why not buy some buttermilk powder? Then you'll never be without.

I keep forgetting to buy that, too! I'll add that to my list. I don't
often need buttermilk. I don't do a lot of baking and I sure don't
drink buttermilk. I used to by Saco buttermilk powder. Thanks for the
reminder, Graham.

I do that sometimes too, but I also try to have powered buttermilk on hand.

I keep forgetting to add powdered buttermilk to my list. I've added it.
I'm also nearly out of white vinegar so I've added that to my list.
(White vinegar combined with baking soda and water is an excellent way
to clean jewelery.)

Vinegar really isnt good for cleaning jewelry, especially jewelry with
stones/pearls... an ultrasonic is best.
