I think the pecans would work well in the filling, btw. You can put some (roasted or not) into meatballs, meatloaf, dumplings, ground them finer and cover something you intend to fry with them, ground them very fine and use them as a thickener instead of flour (e. g. in the before mentioned meatballs or ~loaf),... Substitute any other nuts with them (as someone else already suggested)... Put some on any salad (roasted is better here)... Sprinkle some on any dish... In an airtight container in a dark and cool place they should keep a while. Bye, Sanne. |

I've got a bag of chopped walnuts in my pantry. I bought them at the beginning of March. I'm not freaking out about how quickly to use them. I was planning to make that walnut-sesame chicken recipe I posted but I couldn't find sesame seeds at a decent price. So now I have a bag of chopped walnuts. You don't see me freaking out wondering what to do with them. LOL I'll find some way to use them but it's not an emergency. Jill |

Then there was the actual walnut shell as we > usually see it. You'are right, they are a devil to pick the meat out > of the shells. All so true. My parents bought a second "farm house" and there was a huge old black walnut tree not far from the house. My plan (one season) was to open tons of them and bag for the family. I quickly learned that these are so different than 'english walnuts' that most people buy in the shell from the store. As Wayne said, the nut itself is encased in a larger green outer shell. Think of a peach with a pit in the middle. In this case though, you want the "pit" in the middle. Underneath that green outer shell, is a thick layer of almost black spongy stuff. I had no problem cutting through the green shell and removing the spongy material but....that spongy material would stain your hands black. Quite a mess. Finally, you get to the nut. To crack that nut and get to the meat, think about about trying to break a stone of granite. They are seriously that hard. I had to use a small, short-handle sledgehammer. Had to cover with a cloth first too so the shattered pieces wouldn't fly everywhere. Once to the nut, I didn't even like them much...seemed a bit bitter so I gave up my quest to shell them all. |

Get help, Julie. heheh "I'm just teasing" Seriously though, they are one frozen food that I do like but I rarely buy them and even then only when they go on sale for.... $2.00 for a box of two. Trouble is - If I'm hungry and eat one hot pocket, that in no way will satisfy my hunger...it only kick-starts my hunger. I have make another at least. That said, $2.oo for a meal is cheap and so easy just to heat up and wait...no prep. I often like a no-prep meal after working all day. My big cooking times are on days off. |

I'll bet that was with "English Walnuts". Use two black walnuts and slam your hand on the table, I promise you all the bones in your hand will break long before those two ROCKS do! With the more common english walnuts, I put two in my hand and just squeeze tight and one will break. Easy to do. Black walnuts definitely call for a hammer or vise. Even driving over black walnuts with your car won't work. You could break the outer green covering with them but not the nuts themselves...they would bend your tire. Tough little fellows, they are. |

I'm not freaking about anything, nor will I freeze the nuts. I just want to use them up. I think I currently have two such meats in the freezer. They will get eaten. |
