Default Prolly going away fer awhile

I got my new geezer-grade (wifi, but no GPS) flip phone and will
prolly close my Centurylink DSL internet/landline acct, this Monday.
I plan on using the savings to buy a new (to me) used laptop, which I
can lug up to the lodge and use their free almost-broadband service.
Not as fast --or convenient-- as what I'm used to, but infinitely
cheaper.

I'll prolly hook up with Microsoft, fer email. Poor ol' M$! I'm
starting to actually feel sorry for 'em. Whodda thunk it!? They may
be evil/dumb, but they're not Google!

May take me a couple mos to find a good Usenet provider, but I will.
Sorry, but NiN doesn't wanna play. Any other suggestions?

Bottom line: I'll keep posting as long as NiN wants to grant me gratis use, but
I'll have zero "internet" access after Monday.

nb --I'll be back!

How many times have I posted this?

Blocknews.net

Payment History:
04/25/10 10 GB Block Account $4.50

Your Usage:
You Have Used 3.14292 GBs
Of Your 10 GBs Purchased.

Current Pricing (went down since I signed up):

5 GBs - $2.75
10 GBs - $3.99
25 GBs - $6.75
50 GBs - $9.99
....

So basically I bought 25+ years worth of Usenet access for
$4.40 (now $3.99). Or 1.5 cents a month. You can find that in the
parking lot of your local Quickie Mart. This is why I have very
little patience for people who use Google Groups.

ObFood: I think I'm going to hit up the local Asian buffet tonight.

My mental health professional has directed me to apologize to this
group at large and to Marty and Steven in specific for acting out
here. A change in my medications is being made to address a disorder I
have been experiencing this summer. I will be monitored, but I am no
longer allowed to engage in certain activities I previously have
enjoyed as they exacerbate my condition. I apologize for being
disruptive, in a better state of mind this was generally not an issue
for me.

There's no excuse for that. Use a free one until you decide on a

Well, you just sold me. I drained my pockets for the ten buck program.
NiN doesn't come due for a couple of months. I have two news servers
for the first time ever, and Blocknews brings binaries back. I used to
know what binaries were and how to get 'em, but I forgot ;-)

[ObFood] I'm feeding grandpa recipes to my oldest granddaughter via
email. Chicken soup, pork and beef spareribs are it so far with lots
more to go. It feels like homework.

Some version of this may or may not have been posted earlier. I blame
it on blending the client with the new news server. Posting is "off" by
default and has to be turned on at the Blocknews site.

He's disconnecting his landline/DSL. Regardless of newsreader, he won't
have any way to access the Internet, much less Usenet, at home.

Blocknews isn't free but as Steve pointed out you get a lot of bang for
your buck.

eternal-september is free but every once in a while the guy forgets to
renew his certificate or some such thing.

I had a few problems with NIN a couple of years ago. Their normally
responsive tech support couldn't help me so I didn't bother to renew the
subscription.

Thanks, Jill.

Yep, I'm scrapping my ISP. Probably even my computer (15+ yr old, 32-bit desktop).

I once had/used block news. Barely used even a tiny bit of it. They all
have probs, occasionally, but I've never heard of one who didn't want
my freakin' $$$!

I cannot send 'em a check or even cash. It's like they don't REALLY
want the damn $$$. Fine, they'll get none of mine.

LOL Okay, dude. I wouldn't give away gifted rice! I make red beans
*with* rice. I just don't do a lot of other things with it. It's
certainly not a staple in my diet. But it stores well, so find ways to
incorporate it into your diet.

BTW, while I've been connected here via Blocknews... Thunderbird keeps
notifying me it can't connect to my alternate newsserver: Eternal
September. Every once in a while E-S doesn't work. It's free, but it's
a PITA.

I should have mentioned that my 10gig allotment also includes
downloading everything from alt.binaries.food for the last 8 years,
too.

50 gigs should last you 150 years even if you only dabble in a couple
binary picture groups. You might want to consider writing any
remaining gigs into your last will and testament, which could then be
handed down for another two or three generations.

I bought the $4.50 plan because I felt silly charging a mere $2.50 to
my credit card :-) Yet just last night I ordered a GSM phone SIM card
to be Fex-Ex'd Overnight Air for a mere $1.07 - not sure how they
justify that price - the shipping alone's gotta be at least $5, but
.... <shrug>

ObFood: I think I'll Korean rice cakes today (from pre-sliced rice
cake). I'll have to see what else I have in the fridge to throw in
with it.

Had a Jamaican nanny/housekeeper many years ago. She called this "peas
with rice". IIRC, she cooked it with fresh coconut, wrecking the blender
in the process:-)

If you want to come across like you know anything about computers and
Internet, here's your homework: Find out what the difference is
between a news server and a news reader. You're allowed to use Google.
That's www.google.com.

That sounds like a mess of fun! The Red Beans & Rice notbob and l not
-l are talking about originated in the Mississippi delta and the
Louisiana gulf coast. It's Cajun or Creole, depending upon your point
of view. I lean more towards the Cajun factor, given the anouille
sausage and pickle meat. No coconut milk or blenders involved.

I jes found a recipe fer "pickle meat". Looks like I'll be making my
own, also.

http://www.gumbopages.com/food/pickle-meat.html

I know something about cajun/creole cuisine. Been a West Coast fan of
both the food and music, fer yrs. Absolutely LOVE good LA food, from
Brennan's to 'hot-links'. I even know Popeye's RB&R comes WITH rice
and is cooked to death! (watch their 'greens'. The grns I got from
one newly opened Popeye's gave me food poisoning) I'll continue to
play with the rice.

"pickled meat".

Well, I jes put some homemade "pickle meat" down to rest in the fridge. It's
supposed to 'pickle' fer 3 days.

I really load mine up with andouille and ham. Plenty o' meat and
onions!

I'm expecting much from this "pickled meat".

We'll talk about it --and the rice!-- when I return.

You can't forget the bay leave. It is the thing that most people can't
identify the taste of, but the still know there is something missing.
