Default REC: Pecan Pie Surprise Bars

I get requests for this whenever I ask 'what can I bring?' The
attribution for the recipe is obvious by the branding. Use whatever
brand you like.

Pecan Pie Surprise Bars
9/71
1 package Pillsbury Yellow Cake Mix
1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted
1 egg
1 cup chopped pecans
FILLING:
2/3 cup reserved cake mix
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 1/2 cups dark corn syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 eggs

Grease bottom and sides of 13x9-inch baking pan. Reserve 2/3 cup dry
cake mix for filling. In large mixing bowl, combine remaining dry
cake mix, butter and 1 egg; mix until crumbly. Press in prepared pan.
Bake at 350F for 15 to 20 minutes until light golden brown. Meanwhile,
prepare filling. Pour filling over partially baked crust; sprinkle
with pecans. Return to oven and bake for 30-35 minutes until filling
is set. Cool; cut into 36 bars. FILLING: In large mixer bowl,
combine all ingredients; beat at medium speed 1 to 2 minutes. High
Altitude - 5200 feet: Decrease brown sugar by 1 tablespoon. Bake at
375F as directed above.

That looks lovely. I've never seen anything like that cake mix. Any chance
you could give me an idea how to make my own?

You don't have packaged cake mixes in the UK? If you don't, I have no
idea how to alter the recipe.

Of course the idiot does. She's trying to make everybody believe

I think she is and isn't that a good thing? The ingredients of that
Pillsbury stuff could power a spaceship to the moon.

It would have to be a very small spaceship, since the entire box
has only 2800 kCal.

We really don't know that. She could claim to be Wonder Woman, but does
that actually make her that person? Everybody sits behind a keyboard
and claim anything they like and we really have no way to prove what they
say is true.

You claim to be a vegetarian but we cannot prove that you don't chow
down on huge chunks of meat daily.

Yes we do, but to be honest I haven't looked at them. I just thought what

The brands that I can think of off hand are Duncan Hines and Betty
Crocker. I'm guessing that any cake mix in a box of around 16 ounces
is pretty much the same. In the US, the boxed mix companies have
converted many recipes to using the boxed product for a quick and easy
approach. I think that if you have any recipe that calls for a
pressed bottom crust of some short dough that would work.

Cake mixes are readily available in the UK.

The Betty Crocker equivalent of the above would be for Vanilla cake:

https://www.bettycrocker.co.uk/products/cake-mix

And at minimum, I know Sainsbury sells some varieties of pack cake
mix, too, under their own brand or Wright's. And Amazon UK has a full
array of what is available.

Boron and Janet, *if* you couldn't buy that cake mix, what would you make?

I am asking because I know you are good bakers
