Cars were certainly goofy back then. I used to have a 65 Nova back in the day. Coasting down the mountain would cause oil to pool up inside the cylinders. Accelerating at the bottom would cause a trail of blue smoke to mark our path for about a mile. It was okay to do stuff like that back in the early 70's. Going up the mountain, I had to worry about the radiator losing all its water. That car was always an adventure but it made me who I am today.. I feel sorry for all those kids today with nice, reliable, cars. ![]() That Ford Cortina's twin accent lines that meet up front and round tail lights reminds me of a 62 Rambler American. The Cortina's rear end had a much more finished, complete, treatment. The rear on the Rambler looks fairly uninspired. That's the breaks. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/3/2506393_621071f0db.jpg |

You should have, at the very least, poured condensed milk into the radiator to seal the leak. You probably needed belts and hoses too! What kind of mechanic were you? leo |

I've never heard of milk in the radiator. Thanks for the info. I'll remember to avoid anybody that does that. I'm a fan of Alumaseal, myself. I was just a kid when we had that car. These days I'm older and wiser. Unfortunately, I'm starting to lose my facilities. I was doing a brake job on my son's car last week and could not remember where to attach one end of a spring. Looks like it's the end for me. That's the brakes. |

I liked that clamshell hood too. Having that much access to the engine would be just awesome. The only Brit car that I ever had was a BMC 1100. I was most impressed by it. There's probably no other car ever built that could seat 4 adults so handlily on such a small wheelbase. I had never seen a car with a transverse engine and front wheel drive before. I told my wife that one day all cars would have this drivetrain - and the rest is history. ![]() https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1LpDxLZdiY |

Each wheel was connected to the one on the same side. This resulted in a car that was very loose around the pitch axis but allowed for almost zero roll during cornering and loading. Very unusual! When I bought the car I had never driven a 4-speed before. The look of apprehension was probably very similar to that young girl. By the time we got it home, a couple of miles away, I had it figured out and was ready to drag race VW Bugs. Hee hee. |
