Default Tomato Paste In Tube

Not too long ago, at least here (here being the area where I live/shop),
this stuff was only available at a few places and rather expensive. Then I
few months ago, I thought I was lucky to find it for cheap at Big Lots. But
now? It's everywhere and it's cheap! I am happy. I can use it freely now.
I love the stuff.

I just use the canned stuff and if there's any left over that I can't
use within a week or so I throw it out. The cans are only about $0.50
each, so it's no big deal.

If I had a tube it would get lost in the fridge.

The canned stuff freezes well. I just put a sandwich bag over the can
and stick it in the freezer.

Early tomato crop is in. I wanna plant basil and tomates, and maybe some other things cause I've got a big front garden bed I've put some compost on:

Nothing gets lost in my fridge now. I put some clear trays in there. When
use tomato paste, it's often just a teaspoon at a time so can is a big waste
for me.

I stick my leftover tomato paste in baggies in the freezer. I remove all the air and freeze it in a thin sheet so I can later break off sections while it's still frozen. The paste saved this way is a bit hard to find sometimes. It always makes me happy to find the paste in the freezer after searching for it. Sometimes I don't find it and it makes me sad.

Trader Joe's sells tomato paste in a tube now for under $2, but I'm
old fashioned like you except I portion out what's left from the can
in 1T amounts and freeze them to use in stock, soup or stews.

That works too. I flatten it and then make lines so it's easier to
break off. Still prefer the 1T portions though.

That's how I was when I went to the garage for more olive oil. I could have
sworn that I had a tiny bottle. I did but I had to go back and look again.

I don't know how, why or when stores decided that tomato paste in a
tube was OK to sell at a reasonable price, but it seemed like one day
they were in the $6 range and under $2 the next.

I do exactly the same, although I don't have any trouble finding it in the
freezer.

True, I never understood why it was that expensive either.

You store small bottles of olive oil in the garage? How quaint? I keep mine in the kitchen. Oh well!!! Its a way to get more exercise.

The sellers jack up the price on the tubes, not because the tubes are so terribly expensive themselves, but because YOU think the tubes are so much better/more convenient than the cans!! $2+ for a tube of tomato paste? DUH!!! That's highway robbery!!

Default Tomato Paste In Tube

In the canning section of most stores, I was able to buy an item that is great for storing little leftovers. It looks like a silicone ice cube tray with a tight fitting cover. It's what I use to store my home made pesto. It has 9 square separate sections, and I can just pop out one section at a time. I also use it for the leftovers from a little tomato paste can. I leave it in the freezer. It's sort of like a Tupperware container with a rubber lid.

Stuff seems to get buried in our drawer freezer. Small stuff falls to the bottom. It would be a lot easier to find small stuff if we had a side by side design.

We wedge our tube in the fridge door, between the worcestershire sauce, the
Crystal hot sauce, and a mustard or two.

Why don't you buy some baskets to use in the freezer? That way small
stuff won't fall out and you can remove them to search for whatever it
is you're looking for.

My DD's house came with a side by side and they hated it. Got rid of
it as soon as they could. They have a French door model with a
freezer drawer now and it works for them.

I hate the side by side but nothing else would fit except for a too small
top freezer kind.

The ice maker takes up a large amount of space in the refrigerator. It's cool to be able to dispense ice through the door but next time I'm looking for an ice maker in the freezer - like God intended!

Oddly enough, we don't have an ice maker in the freezer.

It is for this very reason that I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that countertop icemakers are going to be trending! Refrigerators are going to get smaller but our need for ice will increase. These icemakers are going to be HOT!!!

The House of Bove has been richly blessed with cubes of pure joy.

All others of faith and pure water may apply for dispensation.

So mote it be.
