Default Food Network hits a new low

It's bad enough that Food Network has run out of good instructional
cooking shows and resorted to crappy cooking contests, first with
professionals and then amateurs, but today I caught a bit of a new low
..... Worst Cooks in America. From the few minutes of it that I could
bear to watch, they have group of semi celebrities who are absolutely
horrible cooks and there is a competition to teach them to be better.
You may sort of recognize the actors but not quite be able to place them.

It might be worth my while getting rid of the TV. There's
F all on it these days.

the show has been on for years, usually with a truly inept citizen who
has never eaten anything but takeout or packaged goods.

For the most part FoodTV has so deteriorated since I first began
watching it aome twenty years ago that it's worthless... but if I
happen to catch it the only cooking show I watch anymore is Guy
Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, I find him somewhat entertaining
but mostly it's about real people who actually cook for a living who
demonstrate what they do.
http://www.foodnetwork.com/shows/din...and-dives.html
The very worst/dumbest show by far in my opinion is Iron Chef.

Sounds like gripping viewing!
<rolls eyes>.

This is why we need governments willing to euthanase everyone involved
in the mainstream entertainment industry.

That's not a new show. What I don't get is... What's to prevent a good
cook from faking to be a bad one?

In the UK from 1995-2000:

It was actually quite fun to watch and even helpful on occasion.

'Worst' shows have been on EVERYWHERE recently.

Worst drivers in (pick a city, State, or Country),
worst criminals, worst part-goers, and more.

If SOMEONE didn't watch them, they wouldn't BE on.

I think Kitchen Nightmares is the worst so-called cooking competition on
TV. I watched one episode and part of a second one. That is all I
could take. It's pure junk.

How is that show a competition? Isn't that the restaurant redo?

No, this was not the restaurant redo unless I used the wrong name (which
is quite possible). The one I have in mind gives each contestant a pack
of money. They bid on a ridiculous item that one of the other
contestants must use as their only/primary cooking tool. For example,
the episode I watched required one competitor to do everything (cooking,
cutting, etc.) using only some foil wrappers from chocolate bars.

I just scrolled through a list of titles on the Food Channel. I think
the name of the program I tried to describe is Cutthroat Kitchen (not
Kitchen Nightmares).

These days I find more interesting cooking shows on ... Cooking Channel!

They seem to have split off their competition shows and actual
cooking shows, pretty much. Food Network is rather useless
now. Unless you like cupcake competitions and the like, which
I don't.

There are a number of other channels that air a some decent cooking
shows that are more about cooking that celebrity chefs. Considering the
number of competition /reality shows, restaurant makeovers, staged
restaurant undercover exposees and similar stuff, they seem to have more
actual cooking shows that the Food network.

I got rid of mine in 1992. Smartest thing I've ever done. I can't stand
seeing TV anywhere anymore.

Same here. If I watch a cooking show, I would like to pick up hints
(and even recipes) that I can use. I'm not interested in watching
competition among "chefs" who have baskets of strange ingredients that I
would never use.

Dave, the current season...ended Sunday night, I think...just had ordinary people
who couldn't cook at all, not a celebrity among them.

They did do at least one celebrity season earlier, though. You must have been
watching an old series.

I'm thinking I should send them my ex-DIL - never knew a person who
was such an awful cook, really made no difference what she cooked. Not
just being nasty about an ex. she even acknowledges it herself.

When they were still married and my son was with the Fisheries Dept.
he came home with a beautiful chicken halibut (small whole halibut)
straight from the sea, to die for. I certainly nearly killed her, she
phoned and asked us over and asked me how to cook it. Butter dish,
place fish in dish, squeeze some lemon over, hot oven, 20 mins tops.

We were served an incinerated mess - couldn't tell it had ever been
halibut, she claimed it would have been raw my way Thankfully my
granddaughter is a great little cook, got it from her dad

It's in it's 8th season. I watched part of the 2nd I think, maybe two
episodes. The wife and I were flabbergasted, who would want to watch
this? Train-wreck fans, I guess.

No. Nothing is worth watching if there are ad breaks (or these days,
ads within the show itself before the main ad break).
If they broadcast the second coming of Christ, I might relent.
We have one non-commercial channel here, and even that's been ruined
by relentless PC propaganda.

I've watched either DVDs, or downloaded all my viewing for the past 16
years. That works perfectly fine for me.

I image the producers vet them well, but a ringer could slip through.
They are also looking for the odd personalities too. More important
than cooking ability.

In the case of the latest, they are probably a group of has-been
celebrities looking for spotlight. Just as Trump's Celebrity
Apprentice. Anything to make a buck and be seen on TV.

Yes. I watched a few minutes and could not take any more of it. Who
comes up with these dumb ideas?

If y'all had to sit through an evening of 1960s TV, y'all would be
bored to death.

The bank I go to has a big TV in the waiting area tuned to a cooking
channel. I like to watch the program because typically, there will be
good-looking, clear skinned, clean, women on-screen. A lot of the times
they're perky. They also cook stuff that I wouldn't so that's kind of
interesting. The photography is always clear and bright and it depicts
life in a fairly attractive manner. What's not to like?

Desperate Hollywood types, watching people bail TV by the thousands/millions and relying ONLY on the Internet for their entertainment. Like me!

They try to pass them off as competitions but they are basically
"reality" shows.
