All I can think is you're in a location of much more mild weather...
your system wouldn't work here where temperatures in winter are often
in the minuses, as in below zero F.

Nobody uses a boiler for heat other than old and out of date
apartments in big cities.

It's not free. When you waste water, your money goes down the drain
with it.

It runs the heating as well as the hot water though the same as mine, yes?

And do the boilers you describe give instant hot water and heating?

Just to add, are you aware we are on the same latitude as Moscow?

Hot water heating is not uncommon outside big cities, but forced-air
is the most common kind.

Fuel is cheap in the U.S., so there's no motivation to switch to
higher-efficiency methods.

I don't have the data on my house handy, but my husband's workshop is
800 square feet, and is heated with a natural-gas-fired forced-air system.
Last month's gas bill for the shop was $48, and I'm pretty sure that
about $15 of that bill was a fixed fee for the gas company's overhead.
$33 to heat 800 square feet for a month is not too bad.

Of course not! It's almost as though she lives on another planet, at
my aunts house in the UK as you say, there is a little box, about the
size of a laptop, slightly thicker and it heats all the water and
rads. Win/win I would think.

Over the years and many moves I have had all sorts. I like electric
but you need a super insulated house for it to be economical, but it
does offer the advantage of individual room heating. However, it
depends a lot (to me anyway) how electricity is produced locally.

We had a forced air house for several years but I did find it was more
dusty, the house was at least 80 years old, maybe all the ducting
needed to be taken down and seriously cleaned.

Yes it does. The motivation is here to use other methods. My younger
daughter recently put a heat pump in her house and says the savings
were great, now she is considering adding one upstairs as well.
Apparently with those the main thing is to have someone install it who
really knows what they are doing, placing is crucial.

As I have already said, we are on the same latitude as Moscow.

You were not being an a-hole at all, Ed.
I stand corrected and it was interesting to read about that area.

There are so many different areas on our planet, it's a shame that we
don't have many more documentaries on unknown out-of-the-way places.
So many documentary shows often rehash the more well known areas.

There are many wildlife docs but after a while, they turn <yawn>.
I much prefer docs that concentrate on history and geology of a
certain area. I've watched a few lately. nice

Yes, it does. It replaced the back boiler in the living room fireplace,
the Rayburn in the kitchen, the water cylinder in the hall cupboard, and
the two tanks in the loft.
Re-routing the pipework, adding a new trap door in the pantry,
decommissioning the two boilers, removing the old tanks and cylinder,
and making the fireplace safe to use again made it a bigger job than
just switching boilers - oh, and the concrete pad for the boiler to sit
on, and they bored a hole for the vent for my clothes dryer, and fitted
it for me. They also had to redo the oil line, as the existing line had
been somewhat bodged - once the line from the oil tank went underground,
the previous installers had switched to cheap blue plastic water pipe,
then switched again to copper where it came up to the house. It was
leaking at the bodged-up joints. My supplier said the job would take
three days. It did, and they cleaned up after themselves, too. They
balanced the radiators, and installed thermostatic valves on most of
them, too.

Keep in mind though - you do still get some warming effect from the
Gulf Stream and Moscow does not.

You are about 98% right though. I happened to hear about a couple of
places dryer than average so I figured I'd have some fun with you. In
the US all the deserts get at least some rain.

The Gulf stream doesn't cover the whole of Scotland. It is only in the West
coast channel. Believe me, it gets jolly cold here!

Upstate New York, where Sheldon lives, seems to have a lower annual winter temperature than Scotland (doing a quick check)...'course Scotland can get quite chill :-)

The temp in the British Isles generally is tempered somewhat by the ocean currents...you'll find roses still extant (in the lower reaches of the UK, at least) in December, but I don't think you'd find roses blooming in the Capital Region of NY state at that time.

Ocean currents definitely make a difference in local climate. I notice
that sf and I have *almost* the same latitude...she's just a bit more
north of me but not by much. We both live on a coast but each of us
has different ocean currents affecting our weather.

I take it you mean Southern England???

Anyway, Sheldon tried to say that the reason we have combi boilers was
because we have warmer weather lol

If you came to spend a winter in Scotland, believe me, you wouldn't come in
summer clothing. It is damned cold!

S. Viemeister can tell you all about that!!!

Do they run the central heating too?

You criminally STALK and ABUSE women, you sick little dwarfy man!

Here's what you did when you went all over the Usenet impersonating the
well-liked regular named "sf" and posting all her personal data on the
net against her will, including her:

* home address
* age
* cell phone number
* husband's name

etc.

YOU did that, you evil *******!

And then you had the hubris to actually GLOAT about in public saying:

She should call the cops. I've already publicly admitted it is me so
a conviction should be a piece of cake and then forging would stop.
So what's stopping her? I think she suffers from Bovism - she just
loves the attention and drama and screw the rest of the group.

And before that you literally stalked poor Omelet, a local Auustin
favorite, right off the Usenet!

In your worst moment ever you actually begged her to KILL you:

Sorry I don't fit either of your Ideal Psycho Pal Profiles.

-sw
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd prefer you use a sniper rifle on me from a few hundred yards away.
There you go - a reason for you to buy yet another gun and ammo.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then after having your nose rubbed in your filthy criminal stalking you
came back with, not an apology, nor the slightest remorse, just this:

"The facebook group is much more pleasant."

But we all know that's only because you cower over there in mortal fear
of being booted by the FB admins.

You're _so done_ here virus, I mean really ****ing done.

I'm making you a project like no other, expect a lot more of your evil
abuse and hatred to be aired for all to see here.

And we both know there's a google archive full of your hatred of women
just waiting to be hung out on the virtual clothesline to dry.

Enjoy then, you rotten, worthless misogynistic *******!

Here's a pic of the giraffes at the National Zoo...same storm last
week. Did you see this?

Why did you think that I do? Panda's are cool. They are in danger of
extinction because of way too many cheap Chinese people encroching on
their habitat. Bamboo grows like weeds and is actually hard to get rid
of in your yard.

That's where you are not thinking. I said I will occasionally keep a
bowl warm (or you could do a stack of plates) but it's not constant
running water. Put hot water in right before serving to warm the
thing. My God, people just assume the extreme here. This is a silly
ng.

Then wideASS bobblehead barbie assumes that renters waste water.
Another silly assumption.

Maybe some of us catch the water until hot and use it for other
things.
Maybe some of us do realize that we pay for water, with a bill or it's
included in the rent.

Maybe I live right on top of two giant water heaters that supply
hot water to 23 other apartments.

So Maybe I get almost instant hot water.

In my fairly worthless opinion, anyone that wants to nit pick about
saving the earth's resources should just kill themselves right now.
Think how much that would save in energy, pollution, and resources
used just for your one life on a daily basis....then for the many
years that you might have lived on.

And don't forget about the poor Walmart employees being exploited on a
daily basis.
