The places gets pretty busy so they slice up a few pounds when things are slow so they aren't holding everyone up slicing when it gets busy. People are going to take it home and out it in their fridge for at least a few days before they use it. |

It does save them time when it gets busy. About 30 years ago I used to go to a small deli/grocer store for sandwiches at lunch time. They were made to order and quite good. There was always some older retired person in the midst of the lunch rush buying four slices of bologna. |

I can't say that I aw that at the above deli. It was more typically some older German or eastern European buying their cold cuts for the week and they took forever. Thank goodness for the pre-made sandwiches. |

Deli workers go home hours before the store closes, so late shoppers that want deli meat would have to pick it up in packages. Same with the unsold salads. They would be packaged and go into the deli refrigerator case. Stores are pretty good about judging how much product will sell in a day, so I rarely see any of either one in the refrigerated case the next day. Of course, Steve Wertz claims to be an expert on everything and thinks he knows better than I do how my grocery stores operate. They package it and put it out in the cold cases. It is clearly marked as to what it is. No mistaking it for anything else. It is bargain priced. It always appears to be gone in the morning. They tend to be small and quite ripe and are always cheap there. I stop by several times a week on the way home from the gym and pick up a 2-3 at a time. There are a few dullards here who seem to have trouble with the fact that she checked the price..... 50 cents... and when questioned about being sold individually instead of by the pound she checked again, realized she was wrong and weighed them. I ended up paying by the pound like I usually do several times a week and have been doing for years. |

There's a lot of loss with produce, what doesn't sell rots... makes more sense to sell bananas at cost or even less to minimize losses. I see reduced price produce offered every time I shop Often stores carry merchandise called "Loss Leaders", sold at a small loss in order to attract customers into the store who will then buy high profit items. There's an ice cream store near where I live that sells ice cream made on premises that gives customers free toppings when they buy bulk hand dipped, including free bananas. Their ice cream is very good but expensive, they don't lose by offering free toppings when it increases sales. Do you really think the fast food joints would sell nearly so many fries if not for the free ketchup... it's not really free. Many stores sell bananas priced at cost in order to attract customers to buy the high profit seasonal fruit. The market in town advertizes bananas in their weekly circular every week at 49¢/lb, probably still more than they pay but attracts folks to buy the expensive seasonal fruit, like cherries, peaches, plums, etc... and the bananas are placed so people have to traverse the entire produce department to get to them. |

It is the reason I tend to buy only stuff that is on sale. The meat counter tends to be busy and they prepare your order and then bring it around to you when it is all packed up so you don't have the time to check the weights and prices, and then it is too busy to go back. You just want to get out. It has happened too many times and with too many different staff. Since my Dutch butcher closed I have been going to another place that has great meat and good prices and they give me what I order and there are no little tricks going on. |

They are typically in the 60-80 cent per pound range here. This place always has a lower price, but they also have lower quality bananas. They tend to be ripe and on the verge of overripe, so I only get a few at a time. However, as I pointed out before, when I questioned selling by the piece instead of by weight she checked and I was right. |

Of course you were right...I can't believe this discussion is still going on. The vast majority of retailers sell bananas by the pound. I know of a small corner store with no scale. The proprietor sells them by the banana...$1.00 each. === |
