I had to pick up some stuff at the butcher/deli down the road from me.
While I was checking out I grabbed some bananas. The cashier looked a
little confused and then started counting them and said something about
them being 50 cents apiece. I looked at her puzzled and then told her
they are bananas. They are sold by the pound. Doh. A hand of 6 bananas
would have been $3.

They're not always sold that way here. Target sells them per piece.

In cities here there are places for office workers to choose a take-
away picnic lunch; they all seem to sell whole apples and bananas priced
by the piece. I don't think they even have scales to price anything by
weight.

Sure, makes sense in a sandwich shop or the like.. I've never seen them
by the piece in supermarkets or grocery stores. Size varies to much
bunch to bunch..

the individual piece. Like one banana for 75 cents versus 50 cents a
pound.

the pound, because when I questioned it and she looked it up she charged
by the pound, and at the same rare per pound that they usually are.

Actually, she apologized to me. When I told her the bananas are sold by
the pound there, she checked again and then weighed them. They are sold
by the pound there.

What I found amazing is how many people sided with the clerk yet have
never been to the store and never saw how they were priced. I can see
selling by the piece at a lunch counter, but I've never seen it that
way in a grocery store.

The going rate for bananas in Canada is about $.78/lb. Why would a
deli/butcher, who are NOT in the produce business and don't get bulk
produce discounts from distributors, carry them for $.28/less per
pound than the regular grocery stores?
