Long story short, I went to the California Barbecue Association and
followed their link to supported charities. I found a local charity
that focuses on supporting exited foster children, so I went to their
web site to see how I could help and found the link to Amazon Smile.

If you're already an Amazon shopper, this is a way for you to "do some
good" while you shop! They have a variety of non-profits to choose
from if you haven't chosen one to support through Amazon already.
http://smile.amazon.com/about Bottom line: if you're shopping at
Amazon anyway, you might as well team up with them and send your
favorite non-profit some monetary support. It will cost you nothing.

I'm hoping this is news to someone who uses Amazon already because it
sounds like a terrific program.

I'm a Prime member and I have been shopping at Amazon Smile for a while now. I love that every purchase I make sends a bit of money to the charity I have designated.

Same here. My charity must get quite a bit from me, but I've never been
able to find out what percentage of your purchase goes to them. My
charity is a local cat rescue, they are also my charity of choice
through payroll at work.

If you read the link, it tells you:

The AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price from
your eligible AmazonSmile purchases.

Yes, it clearly shows that 0.5% will be donated, but there is no way to
learn at the end of the year (or quarter) how much the total is. I spend
far too much on Amazon, but I do not keep a running tally that would enable
me to know how much my charity receives. I do the same thing with Kroger,
but they do provide a way to learn the total. This would not change my
spending habits, but it would just be nice to know how much my charity
receives from AmazonSmile.

I do the same thing. My charity is also a local cat rescue--the same one
where I adopted Selina and Nikki.

Agreed!
However, I'm re-evaluating which ones I favour. I am constantly
bombarded with requests so that I am becoming "charitied-out".
Furthermore, some of the major charities pay obscene salaries to their
CEOs and other senior staff.
Being a "survivor" (Oh, how I hate that term) I give to the major cancer
fund but I'm seriously questioning whether to this year. It's a
bottomless pit.

I stopped giving to two charities in previous years because of the salaries
of the staff!

I don't care. I'm not writing it off, so I don't need to keep track.
If I really wanted to, I could go to the past purchases and figure it
out - but I'm not interested in doing that.

Don't make any special purchases! Shop at Amazon as little or as much
as you normally do, the only difference is you'll be doing it through
smile.amazon.com so Amazon can donate 0.5% of the total to the charity
of your choice.

The nice thing is that Amazon has hundreds of charities available for you to pick from. IF you have a local charity that is not on there, have them sign up.

It's up to the donor to conduct their own due diligence and decide.

What brought me there WAS a local charity. You have lots of choices.
In fact, you might find your cat rescue there and if they aren't -
tell them to sign up.

I give to a mix of local, national and international charities (human
social and medical).

The local foodbank has the least objectionable salary scale but there
are other highly worthwhile charities where the salaries are increasing
or are objectionably high. They have in effect become "big business".

Sorry, I don't rescue cats, but I do give to give to a local animal rescue.

Oh, no, I don't write it off. In fact, I don't think the individual could
legally do that--it's Amazon that can probably get a tax write-off. But it
would be interesting to see just how much we are able to help.

Please explain why you think you can't figure it out yourself?

~~~~~~~~
Because I make a great many purchases from Amazon, and I do not keep a
running tally. If it were important enough, I could go through the entire
list at the end of a year and multiply by 0.05%, but it really isn't that
important. It would simply be "nice" if Amazon released these figures at
the end of the year (as Kroger does), but it certainly is not something that
I am going to stress over.
Your buying history is located in Past Purchases. What's keeping you
from looking at what you bought there? You don't need a to the penny
accounting. Round purchases up or down, estimate the total and divide
by .5%. Easier yet - take .10% and cut it in half.
I used to work for a universally recognized international charity, and it
totally disgusted me how much bloat there was at the top of even our little
locally run chapter with their outrageously inflated salaries. It made me
absolutely sick to see them driving Porsches to work, knowing that was
money we were not spending helping our community, just lining their
pocketbooks.
That is so true, Janet. I never donate through third party "charities",
including the United Way.
I wonder if there's a way to get a statement of how much has been
donated, for tax purposes? I'm in the process now of asking all of my
doctors and dentists to give me statements of my out of pocket payments
for that purpose. I do it every year.
I was just wondering the same thing. For tax purposes.
I think they have to be 503c qualified. Both of my charities I give to are.
They say that you can not claim this on your taxes. You aren't actually
donating anything. They are.
Why do you need a yearly statement from your doctors for out of pocket
medical, make your co-payments by check or credit card... credit card
companys send a yearly statement... shows all your Amazon payments
too. However I doubt you can obtain proof that your particular
contributions were made to the charity of your choice. A lot of
businesses have begun the same program, especially supermarkets. I
believe that practice should be illegal, it's an organized crime
practice, it's racketeering like paying protection money.
That makes sense to me. I suspect you are correct, Julie.
A credit card company will send you a yearly statement showing all
your purchases, you just need to compute that 1/2%... but I don't
think you can know with certainty that the charity of your choice
received your contribution... like with any program there are admin
costs, I doubt much gets to the charity, and then the charity has
admin costs as well... charities are a scam too. I donate pet food to
local animal shelters, no cash.
It's a simple concept. You pay the same amount no matter if they
donate the ,5% or not.
My motivation for using Amazon Smile has nothing to do with the donation being a tax write off. Nor does any of the other donations I make elsewhere. It is nice if it is, but that's not why I do it.
