Long story short, I went to the California Barbecue Association and followed their link to supported charities. I found a local charity that focuses on supporting exited foster children, so I went to their web site to see how I could help and found the link to Amazon Smile. If you're already an Amazon shopper, this is a way for you to "do some good" while you shop! They have a variety of non-profits to choose from if you haven't chosen one to support through Amazon already. http://smile.amazon.com/about Bottom line: if you're shopping at Amazon anyway, you might as well team up with them and send your favorite non-profit some monetary support. It will cost you nothing. I'm hoping this is news to someone who uses Amazon already because it sounds like a terrific program. -- A kitchen without a cook is just a room |

If you read the link, it tells you: The AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price from your eligible AmazonSmile purchases. ~~~~~ Yes, it clearly shows that 0.5% will be donated, but there is no way to learn at the end of the year (or quarter) how much the total is. I spend far too much on Amazon, but I do not keep a running tally that would enable me to know how much my charity receives. I do the same thing with Kroger, but they do provide a way to learn the total. This would not change my spending habits, but it would just be nice to know how much my charity receives from AmazonSmile. MaryL |

However, I'm re-evaluating which ones I favour. I am constantly bombarded with requests so that I am becoming "charitied-out". Furthermore, some of the major charities pay obscene salaries to their CEOs and other senior staff. Being a "survivor" (Oh, how I hate that term) I give to the major cancer fund but I'm seriously questioning whether to this year. It's a bottomless pit. Graham |

If it were important enough, I could go through the entire list at the end of a year and multiply by 0.05%, but it really isn't that important. It would simply be "nice" if Amazon released these figures at the end of the year (as Kroger does), but it certainly is not something that I am going to stress over. MaryL |

Your buying history is located in Past Purchases. What's keeping you from looking at what you bought there? You don't need a to the penny accounting. Round purchases up or down, estimate the total and divide by .5%. Easier yet - take .10% and cut it in half. -- A kitchen without a cook is just a room |

I used to work for a universally recognized international charity, and it totally disgusted me how much bloat there was at the top of even our little locally run chapter with their outrageously inflated salaries. It made me absolutely sick to see them driving Porsches to work, knowing that was money we were not spending helping our community, just lining their pocketbooks. -- jinx the minx |

They say that you can not claim this on your taxes. You aren't actually donating anything. They are. |

I do it every year. Why do you need a yearly statement from your doctors for out of pocket medical, make your co-payments by check or credit card... credit card companys send a yearly statement... shows all your Amazon payments too. However I doubt you can obtain proof that your particular contributions were made to the charity of your choice. A lot of businesses have begun the same program, especially supermarkets. I believe that practice should be illegal, it's an organized crime practice, it's racketeering like paying protection money. |

A credit card company will send you a yearly statement showing all your purchases, you just need to compute that 1/2%... but I don't think you can know with certainty that the charity of your choice received your contribution... like with any program there are admin costs, I doubt much gets to the charity, and then the charity has admin costs as well... charities are a scam too. I donate pet food to local animal shelters, no cash. |

It's a simple concept. You pay the same amount no matter if they donate the ,5% or not. -- A kitchen without a cook is just a room. |

My motivation for using Amazon Smile has nothing to do with the donation being a tax write off. Nor does any of the other donations I make elsewhere. It is nice if it is, but that's not why I do it. |
