You have to have a lot of money to be able to camp out for 4 days to save 20
bucks.

I cannot understand the "tradition." I would much rather spend the time
enjoying myself, relaxing and having a good time. I blame the advertisers
for creating this absurd culture of consumerism that has taken what should
be a pleasant and reflective time of the year and turned it into a hell
hole; an all out brawl to buy crap and stress yourself into a coronary at
the same time.

When did "how'd you survive the holidays" become a standard response to the
new year?

I'm with you, baby. My shopping amounts to a few checks written and mailed, my tree goes up in 20 minutes.

The consumers all go along with it, so you can't blame the retailers entirely. I still mourn for the guy trampled to death in NY a few years ago on a Black Friday morning. I bet his survivors despise the whole scene now. Very sad.

I camp out in the comfort of my home in front of my PC while availing
myself of even better sales than fighting the maulers and with
expending no more effort than mouse clicks.

Shopping on Thanksgiving day and Black Friday is something that does not
appeal to me. I have to be encouraged repeatedly to go, I just do not
care for shopping at all.

You will not see my family shopping on Thanksgiving, with the exception
of part of my brother's family, he has 4 daughters who enjoy going, and
a few of them have children of their own. There is usually one or two
men who go with them, they have an itinerary that is printed out and
they wear matching shirts. This year, they are all at Disney World, so
their shopping spree finally ended. They got this from their late
mother, who was a sweetheart, but she loved to spend money.

It has to be hyperbole. I've never understood the holiday frenzy that
others seem to talk about, we have never gone overboard with shopping
or spending - so the concept is out of my realm of experience. We
have wonderful Christmas's with plenty of gift giving, but nobody goes
into the poorhouse and we aren't exhausted at the end of the holiday
season.

We went last year on Thanksgiving. Tried to put up the prelit tree and it
great parts of it wouldn't light. This seems to be a problem with the
prelits after they reach a certain age. Target had a special on trees for a
few hours so we bought that and some cat litter because we needed that.
Heh.

Only problem we encountered was a massively long line.

This year we went on Black Friday. Rite Aid had $10 off a $50 Itunes card,
with coupon. And daughter wanted to go to Target. We didn't buy much aside
from a new string of lights for the family room windows (the ones we bought
last year were pretty but kept burning out), cat food and a few groceries.

When we went to checkout, I looked for a cashier that I had used before.
Daughter insisted that I just get in this one line. No matter as another
employee took over to send the first cashier on lunch. Then, big problem.
Not only did she not do my Cartwheel but didn't give my bag discount. So
they had to take me to another register to sort it all out. I was given $6
back in cash. No clue if that was the right amount back or not but I had
been waiting there long enough!

Thankfully the tree that daughter bought last year lit just fine. And my
new computer chair came. Very little difficulty putting that together. So
all in all a good day.

I used to go all out for the holidays, decorating all over, inside and out.
I baked and made candy. I am sooo over it now!

One thing I have always tried to do is get the shopping done early. And
aside from a few stocking stuffers, I have done that. I finally got the
Costco site to work and did the last of the shopping late last night. I am
just hoping that the people I sent the things to appreciate that I did send
them early. They are mostly food items. I hate it when my fridge is
already stuffed full of holiday foods and then I get a food gift that needs
to be refrigerated. Hopefully now they can enjoy these things before
Christmas and still have room in their fridge. Plus one person is moving
soon. But not entirely sure when.

I heard on the radio yesterday that Macy's in NYC had:
"More than 15,000 people showed up on Thanksgiving for the store's 6
p.m. opening."

LOL! Mass insanity!

I love that store, but it's kind of hard to negotiate when it's
not packed. Yikes.

Sorry that this craziness has spread to the UK, but I am glad you saved
yourself. By the time Thanksgiving gets here, I am usually tired from
all of the cooking, dish washing and cleaning, so shopping is the last
thing I want to do.

I guess the shops et al decided it was a good way to sell a lot over a short
period so they copied it.

I have enough work over Christmas. I don't know how you manage Thanksgiving
and Christmas so soon after That is a LOT of work!

I definitely do NOT want to start anything early. I like shopping
during the season.

I can appreciate the frustration. It was not a holiday here this week
but a number of stores and malls have been having Black Friday sales to
combat the lost sales to cross border shoppers. My son called me up
Thursday night about a sale at the store at our gun club. The had a
handgun he was interested in on sale for 50% while supplies lasted. This
place is in the boonies, about 10 miles away. I was there 5 minutes
after opening. There were two guys ahead of me..... the guns were sold
out. Apparently they sold 20 of them the day before. They offered some
deals on other makes and models. A similar one was 20% off and that
might have been a good deal if I had set out to get that one at 20% off,
but as it turned out, it was $250 more than they one I rushed over to get.

My bitching and whining did not get me the deal I wanted or a promise to
order me one at that 50% discount, but I had to go out there today and
pick up the prize I won. I don't know what the prize was for. I had not
bought any tickets, entered any draws or bought anything there that day.

Sorry to hear of your day wasted. I hate when that happens!

Shopping is a bitch alright! Luckily, my wife did not partake which
means I didn't get dragged into the fray. This Black Friday thing passed
without my notice.

I went to the Safeway and it was just great because things were slow -
people must have been at the maul across the street. Yesterday was a
very calm, relaxing, day. Looks like I lucked out this year. :-)

It snowed for most of yesterday and it's bitterly cold today (~ -30C
with wind=chill) so sod it all, I'm staying home in the warm. Opening a
good Bordeaux this evening as compensation:-)

Keep warm, Graham, and enjoy that Bordeaux, I am not much of a drinker,
but I could learn.

Our high today was 76, everybody was wearing shorts and sandals, but a
cold front will arrive Tuesday, and we will have a high of 60. Not cold
enough for Bordeaux or hot chocolate.

We can manage if we decide where to draw the line. Many can't - something about keeping up with trends, Joneses etc. I just don't get it.
