Thanks but I don't buy that sort of greens and there is no way I would do
that! Blow air into the bag? How unsanitary is that? Plus I don't have
room in my fridge for a bag full of air.

Keeps better when acidified... simply toss with a bit of plain white
vinegar, or the juice of a lemon.

The instructions say to blow air in. But it's all a moot point since I have
no room in my fridge for a bag full of air!

I was thinking the question concerned loose greens of different sorts
ready to go in a salad.

Really no way to tell if harvested two days ago or two weeks ago. With
all such vegetables slice a thin bit off the root end with a sharp
knife while holding it under running water, same as cut flowers are
kept fresh longer... make a new cut every two days... will keep celery
fresh a long time.

I keep broccoli fresh like that for a few days, but I stand it in water like
flowers. Lettuce, I haven't done anything like that, I usually keep it
wrapped in the fridge veg bin. It will last a week like that.

I'm pretty sure Julie buys bags of pre-chopped salad, so it's doubtful
there are roots attached.

sf was talking of loose greens which is apparently what she buys. But I
don't buy those.

I usually do. I have bought the heads a few times but generally only when I
am planning to make a huge salad to use right away. I just don't have room
to store things in plastic boxes.

It seems that no-one is talking to anyone else. The light plastic box is
not much bigger than the head of lettuce it contains and about the same
size as a bag of greens.

WTF do you have your fridge stuffed with that there's no room for one
stinkin' tiny head of lettuce? And you really don't need to keep the
plastic container, put the lettuce in a pastic bag, or better yet eat
it... I could never understand this storeaging fresh produce, then
it's not fresh.

I've been wondering the same thing.

You are forgetting the essential element here. It is Bovine. There has
to be a reason that she cannot accept the advice that she had sought.

All true, and normal folks don't buy fresh produce for long term
storage or it'd not be fresh produce... I'm not going to buy a head of
lettuce today that I plan to use a week later. Rather than a plastic
box I would keep a head of lettuce in a plastic bag if I needed to
conserve space, and if not used all at once I pick off outer leaves
until I have how much I want. I really don't buy into Julie's lack of
fridge space, I think it's all about her primary disease "HBS"
(Habitual Bitching Syndrome).

Why are you always talking about how un-fresh you think Trader Joe's
salad greens are if you don't buy them? You have no reason to
continually make false claims if you avoid the bags of salad greens.
