Every time I think I could define it, I think of an exception--
Waldorf Tuna Egg fruit salad Snicker Grilled vegetables [esp Romaine] Dan Eaton is calling a grilled portobello, a few stalks of grilled asparagus and a slice of grilled onion- drizzled with a soy/ginger dressing a 'salad'. The title bothered me-- but I don't know why. He didn't mix it up before plating and I think that is something *my* mind needs to call something a salad. http://hudsonvalley.ynn.com/content/...nger-dressing/ http://preview.tinyurl.com/DanEatonSalad But then there is that Wedge salad. . . I would say that it is cold but then there is the warm German potato salad. And some steak salads are prepared warm. So I really don't know. |

Salad is a mixture of fruits and vegetables. I love salad specially in dinner. I would like to thank you all for sharing wonderful ideas about salad. I like this thread. I like green vegetables in salad because green vegetables are healthy and have many benefits.

The presence of dressing does not automatically make it a salad. Does it mean we're eating salad when we have turkey with "dressing"? They are grilled mixed vegetables that are "dressed" with a sauce. A stretch would be to call it a "deconstructed" salad, but no salad (in my mind's eye) would put hot asparagus and mushrooms together. -- Food is an important part of a balanced diet. |

A blend of foods which can be eaten by themselves, is my way of looking at em. I guess if I mixed up chopped hotdogs, bologna, Spam, etc. it wudn't really seem to be a salad, tho.

I can't get my hands on it right now, but this looks very similar: CRISCO SALAD 1 Cup Crisco 2 eggs 1 cup pecans 1 cup sugar 1 can crushed pineapple, drained 1 package graham crackers 1 box strawberry jello Cream Crisco and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs and beat well after each one. Add pineapple and nuts. Line bottom of long pyrex dish with crackers. Add half of mixture, spreading over crackers. Add another layer of crackers and rest of mixture. Mix jello according to directions on package and let stand in refrigerator until almost congealed; spread on top of mixture. In a grocery store in Vienna I was trying to put together a lunch for the train. All the prepackaged salads had meat in them. So your cured meat mixture would have been a fine salad. |
