Default Cali's Kittens

Cali brought her kittens down from the barn rafters. On the ground
they'd be suseceptible to preditors so they are now in the house. They
are eating very well.

They're a couple of days shy of a month. I already have a good home
for them.

I agree, they are adorable. Still very young. Does Cali wonder where
they are?

I'll assume she does but there wasn't much choice, odds of kittens
surviving outdoors here are slim to none. Next job is to get Cali to
the Vet.

Sunshine is a good name. These don't have names yet.

So adorable! I want to get a cat, but my son has threatened to never
visit if I get one. He's allergic.

Very cute. Will you have them (and Cali) neutered?
Will you keep them as barn cats?

You say they're eating so I gathered they're weaned.

There is some discrepancy of opinion among so-called experts about
whether or not a lactating cat should be spayed. The vet will advise
you about it.

The kittens already have a home, the new owner will have them fixed.
Cali will be going to the Vet very soon for spaying.

They are beautiful. Many years ago, I took in a cat that had been
abandoned. Went to the vet and he said she was pregnant and she was
about 7 months old. Later, she had the kittens and I took her in to be
spayed when the kittens were 8 weeks old. The vet said she was in heat
again, he spayed her and charged me $20 extra. I was stunned.

From all I've read, cats that have had kittens come into season again
rather quickly. The vet might also charge extra for spaying if Cali is
still lactating when they take her in. It could be a much more delicate
procedure.

We had help when we were presented with 8 feral kittens by an
irresponsible mother. The cat organization in this city organized
coupons for us to have each one neutered. We paid for the shots. It
was a good deal because we could have never afforded to fix them all.

I have, but I think there is still a chance his (?) eyes will turn green
or golden. They're still very young, only a few days shy of a month old.

I thought the same, they are so blue but they might not stay that
way.

Not that the kitten isn't already adorable... but think how intriguing
to have a fluffy black cat with bright blue eyes! In that first picture
they almost look violet. Looking at the other angle, I'm thinking if
they don't stay blue they'll be grey.

Wish we had more charitable organizations like that. Children love pets,
including poor children, and their parents can not afford to spay or
neuter their pets.

I believe this was aimed specifically at feral cats with the idea of
limiting the population growth of wild cats without destroying them.
You can't adopt from the Humane Society here without neutering the
animal.

They are so precious. Look a bit older than Cinca De Mayo who we figure
is about 3 weeks old. She is still nursing and weighs 1l ounces. Still
no teeth, but powerful jaws!

Nancy,

Most kittens have blue eyes for several weeks after they are born.

They were checked by the Vet today... they are 3-4 weeks and two weigh
15 ounces, the black one weighs 1 pound. The Vet said they are a few
ounces under weight because their mother stopped feeding them, they
have teeth. They would not have eaten in the barn because Newt is a
hog and pushes them away from food and eats it all. So they are
living in the house where they will be fed. The Vet sent them home
with a big shopping bag filled with all kinds of kitten food and
stuff, even special heart worm meds that they will be fed in ten days.

Same here, Janet. You have to pay for the neutering when you pay the
adoption fee. They do have a voucher program for those who can prove
they can't afford the neutering fee.

Suggestion:

Soften the kibble in water then mix it with the canned food. When I
first start our foster babies on solids, I mix in some formula. A
couple of them needed to be coaxed into solids with baby food meat off a
"parental" finger. They love that baby food!

And sometimes when they have an over-abundance of black dogs or too
many cats or something like that, they really drop the adoption fee.
That would be an opportunity for a family with limited means to adopt.
We all know, however, that bringing an animal home is not a cheap
deal.

So adorable. I'm glad you have homes for them and plans for Cali. Obviously this isn't your first rodeo, I can't figure out why people are telling you how spay them and feed them.
thanks for sharing them.

I don't know either, especially since I didn't ask, and this is
definitely not my first rodeo. All are doing very well, all were
checked by the Vet, and the Vet gave instructions.
Thank you, Nanzi.

Weird question, but are they all females, or can you tell yet? For sure
#2 is, and #3 looks like *she* will be a dark tortie. #1 I'm not sure
about. If they are all females, there has already been a predator. A
male cat.

Cats have a very strange reproductive cycle. Female cats go into heat
just to excite the male. They ovulate only when they've .. um, done it.
This means they stay in heat until they get some. Can be months if no
intact male around. This is why it is so cruel to leave a female pet
cat intact. It's like 24/7/365 PMS.

I was just going to write that those who can't afford an adoption fee
shouldn't get them. If they can't spend that, they can't afford to take
the cat to the vet for checkups, let alone pay for any illness or injury
that might happen.

I thought that tri-colour in cats (calico or tortoiseshell) is
chromosome-dependent , so virtually all calicos are females. If,
rarely, a calico cat is male, it's because he has a chromosome
abnormality and therefore is sterile.

Agreed, those who can't afford an adoption fee can't afford to feed an
animal let alone all the routine Vet costs, etc. A pet is a life long
committment, and it can become expensive.

The Vet said the little calico is female, the other two are males.

No doubt about it! While I hate to say "poor people" shouldn't have
pets, it's as much as a committment as having children. And sorry, but
the government doesn't provide Medicaid or "food stamps" for pets.

My cat Persia (bless her!) has cost a *lot* of money over the years.
I've had her since 2001 and she's probably 14 or 15 years old now. In
the first couple of years she had recurring bladder infections. The vet
bills weren't exhorbitant, but they were frequent. It was discovered
she had a (thankfully benign) bladder tumor. The surgery and lab work
cost roughly $900. Then she had to eat prescription food. That's a big
monthly expense.

In 2010 she was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. (So again with the vet
bills.) The medication was not cheap (Tapazole) and it turned out she
was allergic to it. I had to take her to a special veterinary clinic
outside of Charleston, 130 miles away, for radioactive isotope therapy
to zap her thyroid gland. She was boarded there for 2 weeks. Another
$1000. And of course, still her Rx food.

In 2012 she was diagnosed with early stage renal failure. She eats a
different Rx food and has more frequent vet checks and lab tests. None
of this is cheap.
