Default two changes made in my kitchen

1. I removed one of the oven racks. I was forever burning my hand on
one of them. I doubt I will ever need both racks in the oven
simultaneously, so one has been tucked away. Wish I'd done this years
ago.

2. I've cut my finger for the last time on the Feemster slicer. Off
it travels to a thrift shop with a warning attached.

I have my second one in the top slot for oven racks and it serves as
storage space for a couple of cookie sheets and cooling rack in my
tiny kitchen.

We had one of those when I was a kid and I was always afraid of it, I
guess because it was dull and easy to slice fingers.

That's where mine was when I kept burning the top of my hand. Gee,
slide it under the bed-- ANYplace where you won't get burned.

Hey, an added benefit: more space now in my under-oven drawer.

Good for you! I call it a "brand" when I burn myself on an oven rack.
I usually keep one on the bottom rung and the one I use above it, but
they were repositioned for some reason I don't remember at the moment
and I managed to brand myself twice in a span of less than a month
recently.

Compared to the rest of a self-clean oven, the racks are a pain to
keep perfectly clean. When I got my new oven I put two racks away. I
only use a second rack when I need it.

I use three racks.

One stays at the bottom, with a rectangular pizza stone on it. (Many
ovens with hidden elements specifically warn against placing a pizza
stone directly on the bottom of the oven.)

One stays at the very top, for heating plates at the last minute before
plating.

The third, which has roller bearings, is the main one used for baking.

As to "branding," I use Orca oven mitts, and have never had such a problem.

That's the one which was causing the grief. It left too little
clearance for removing, say, a big casserole with a lid and knob.

Do you slide the rack out before you remove something when the oven is on?

That's the problem. I can't stand mitts, always feel like I'm about
to drop whatever it is because I can't feel the shape of whatever I'm
holding - so I use pot holders.

You might try silicone mitts like the Orcas, then. They're very grippy,
so it's easier to have confidence that they won't slip.

I keep one on the very lowest rung. The one most often used is in the
middle position. It's rare I brand myself on an oven rack, more often
it's happened when my hand hits the top of the oven. And that only
happens when I'm using a towel or a mit rather than a glove.

Have a look around and see if you can find anything like this:

http://www.betterware.co.uk/shelf-guard-twin-pack.html

They fit on the edges of the oven shelves

Just search for "silicone burn guard" on Amazon.com, and you'll find
several styles.

Thanks for the reminder! I looked at one time, but only saw one type
which didn't rate well in the comments section.
http://www.amazon.com/SILICONE-OVEN-.../dp/B003UNBI8C
I see a ribbed silicone model now that may work better.
http://www.amazon.com/Silicone-Oven-...ven+rack+guard
Do you (or does anyone you know) use them?

No, I don't know anyone. I don't need them with the oven I have now, but I
wish I had known about them in the past with other ovens. My problem was
always burning my arm on the shelf above which those things would have
prevented.

I've seen these in some catalogs over the last few months or so. And
just a week or so ago I saw them at a store, but which store I can't
remember. Good idea!

I sure understand how making a change or 2 can really upgrade how you work in the kitchen. We have an island with a butcher block top,,,but DH doesn'[t want it all marked up....??? So he bought me a cutting poard about 15" X 20". I used it on the butcher block for years, then moved it to beside my stove where I do most of my prep intending to move it back. It never went badk, I love it there. It is big enough to keep several items I will be cooking right where I need them. Silly Me, should have done it years ago. It is perfect there. It makes me happy to have it right at hand all the time. Win, Win!!

Interesting. I prefer my cutting block closest to the sink for prep,
rather than the cooktop.

Same here, Larry. I do my prep work on a board by the sink. But hey,
whatever method works best for the one doing the cooking... works

Get some of those flexible mats to use on the island. The only place
to buy them is at Dollar Tree... where they're 2 for $1!

Could not do with only one rack in our oven. That second rack stores a total double layer of black and greasy cast iron skillets..lol. Hear you on the slicer. They are all peeces of sheet in my book. Unless maybe a person is running a high volume deli operation perhaps..and then only for uniform sized processed lunch meat. Brisket slicing is way too complicated for them crazy things to do it right. In fact I have nearly choked to death on Rubens where the meat was cut lengthwise instead of crossways. That be in high dollar places with the fancy slicers. I will take an elderly Jewish guy with a sharp knife to slice my brisket any old day..lol.

My stove oven came with three racks. I leave only one rack in my
oven, one stands on end out of sight tucked into the space between my
fridge and a wall, the third one is in my basement... I've never used
all three at once, I only occasionally use two. I see no reason to
leave an extra rack in the oven, unused it's only something to burn
your arm, and often the unused rack needs to be removed for something
like a tall roast that one forgets to remove before heating the oven,
then one needs to remove a hot rack, and then where to place it? And
I think it's just silly to store cookwear and such in ones oven,
unless they never use their oven... I strongly suspect that those who
use their oven for storage never use their oven and probaby cook
nothing unless it's something to heat in the nuker... some people
actually store stuff in their microwave oven.

Why didn't you just put the unwanted one down at the lowest level of the
oven and put the one you use anywhere above that? Sure would be easier
than having to find someplace to store it outside of the oven.

I had the same thought, Goomba. My oven has two racks and one is on the
lowest level in the oven. Doesn't bother me a bit and it is not in the way.

My oven has 4 levels and two racks.
I keep them both on the bottom two levels.
I cook on the higher one, the bottom one is out of the way
and sometimes I'll put my pizza pan there to catch drips

Someone yesterday mentioned that the bottom rack got in the way of her
vacuuming her oven. HUH? I've never vacuumed my oven - wth?

Maybe she vacuums out all the crud instead of wiping it out after the
cleaning cycle. My racks aren't supposed to stay in there during the
cleaning cycle, so I suppose I could vacuum it out easily. Truth be
told, I've never considered that option!

'Cuz it was always in the way when I vacuumed the floor of the oven.
I never used it there. It took 2 seconds to stash it in a cupboard
made for large shallow objects.
