I err too far on the side of caution and throw out too much
food-particularly dressings. Right now I am pondering a jar of Classico Traditional Basil Pesto sauce in a jar. I think its been opened and in the fridge for 5wks now. It appears that the olive oil has floated to the top and sealed off the sauce, in a sense. No mold, smells strongly of how it should smell. Still good? How long? I like to buy shaved roast beef from the deli counter at the grocery store. I have found that they hate you and wont neccesarily tell the truth if you ask for the expiration date on the opened package of meat-indeed, they wont even let you see how big the opened package is until after you have ordered-they hide it out of site behind all the pristine unopened examples. How long would you keep this in your fridge? |

How long would you keep this in your fridge? I think meat like that is good for 2 to 3 days. I had a link somewhere. Lemme see if I can find it. http://www.fmi.org/consumer/foodkeeper/brochure.cfm |

How long would you keep this in your fridge? As for the roast beef, you can eat it as is as long as it doesn't smell. Once it starts to smell, just eat it with lots of horse radish or some kind of sauce. |

How long? > Is there a "use by" date on the jar? (BTW, if you made pesto from scratch the oil would still have risen to the top.) Read the ingredients. I'm pretty sure that jarred stuff isn't just basil, garlic and oil. There are probaby tons of preservatives in it. But when in doubt, throw it out. How much could it possibly have cost you? > I like to buy shaved roast beef from the deli counter at the grocery > store. I have found that they hate you No, they don't hate me. Maybe they just hate you. ![]() > and wont neccesarily tell the > truth if you ask for the expiration date on the opened package of > meat (snippage) If people were getting food poisoning from the shaved roast beef at the deli counter I'm sure you'd have heard about it. They're probably irritated because you're bugging the hell out of them with your paranoia. Just ask them how long it will be good for and don't buy more than you could use within that time period. i keep food until it smells bad to me or the dh see something in it that
looks icky... as to the meat, if they don't show dh the meat and let him read, not just tell a date i simply will not purchase it, call me ocd or paranoid but i had bad food poisioning once, and that will do for several lifetimes, Lee "z z" > wrote in message ... >I err too far on the side of caution and throw out too much > food-particularly dressings. Thanks, Lee-I had food poisoning twice from a local deli meat
counter-once from shaved beef, once from parmesan crusted chicken patties. Needless to say I never go there now. Each time, I hesitated eating because something just didn't seem right, but there wasnt any glaringly obvious clue. Live and learn. The last occasion the unpleasancy started while I was driving the car and when I got home, I literally stripped off my clothes before going inside. Good thing it was dark out! The truth is, most people don't report food poisoning-only the severe hospitalized dying children get reported to the level of news. It's also difficult to judge just what food is causing it because we eat everything in combination today. I did go back and tell the clerk, but you can imagine what a young clerk's reaction is to a middle aged lady... who knows whether it was reported up higher. I just wanted them to follow better food handling practices. |

Your young clerk probably shrugged and didn't mention it to anyone else. gloria p |
