Default Phoenix/Scottsdale Cook-in Report???

Hi,
I was on vacation from 9/30 to 10/13. I expected
to see stuff about the cook-in when I got back.
Nary a word! How did it go? Did anyone post recipes?

BTW, I'm still waiting to see a comprehensive
listing of all the recipes from the San Dieg0/Poway
cook-in? Did anyone ever compile a list and post
them somewhere?

Kate

It was very, very tiny, Kate. Just me, Readah, Blair and a few other
non rfc'ers. Wayne had to go out of town unexpectedly. We still
had a good time.

No recipes were posted, but I have been bugging readah about the cake
she made. It was marvelous!

I did a Kay Hartman number and made too many dishes. I made a coarse
pork and chicken liver pate from an old Arthur Schwartz cookbook: I
stuffed it into a baguette.

I also found shrimp on sale here in town, and got ambitious and made
shrimp remoulade from Paul Prudhomme's book.

Also made the roasted eggplant and red pepper spread from the Barefoot
contessa.

I had plans to make an upside down tomato tart, but I got too busy
talking and forgot about it. I came home later that night, and made
it. It was marvelous! It was an experiment, anyway.

It strikes me that I made something else, but for the life of me, I
forget what else I made.

Readah made the aforementioned cake, and some wonderful chocolate
cookies with pepper in them. And a lasagna. Blair fixed some
chicken in a soy sauce glaze.

Readah and her husband made Delilahs. Later in the evening, readah
brought out some wonderful limoncello.

Speaking of which, we had an idea for the next cook-in, maybe the next
San Diego cook-in. I have recipe for limoncello that I have been
wanting to try, and readah I think said she has one. We were thinking
about a side by side limoncello tasting. Maybe we could get some
other people to make limoncello and see what everyone turns out?

Blair, readah, you guys want to add to what I posted?

Hmmm. I forgot about it. That was Koko's job. She was in charge of
collecting the information and posting it. If she reads this, perhaps she
will respond. If not I'll email her. <implied threat>

I concur. It was like chocolate-volcano-inside-out cake.
The Mt. St. Helens of chocolate volcano cakes. Evidence
that 3/4ths of the Earth's surface is covered in chocolate.
Good damn cake.

I did Chicken Things, and brought a side of salmon but
never did get around to the Teriyaki (just too much other
food going on; it was always just a backup plan anyway).

Not your pink, wimpy, mayo-heavy TGI Friday's remoulade,
either. KILLER remoulade. Tons of garlic and horseradish
and other good flavors in that. Tang and spice that
grabbed your uvula and swung around a few times before
dropping to the bottom of the quarry.

I'm not sure what I wasn't thrilled about in that one;
needed a different cracker, maybe, or an unusual wine
pairing.

That nice pate' in the baguette shell.

Nailed it, too. The skin was perfect. You saw me chowing

Clear and viscous. Solid stuff.

Their chicken curry was very good, too. And Readah's Lasagna
Bolognese was fantastic.

I could make lemon jello shots and pretend I mis-read the invitation.

Thanks, Christine. Sorry it was so small but it sounds
like y'all had plenty to eat. :-)

But of course! We can do a souffle and my daughter can make
her chicken crepes... we'll be in hog heaven.

Oh, you know Idyllwild? I have a good friend who owns cabins there.
He is now renting me one, as my permanent address. I am heading there
on Monday, to spend the week there, before I come up to the bay area.

I am hoping to get over to Santa Monica and one of the best farmers
markets around. And Surfas: that place is a place to do serious
damage to one's budget.

Ooh...sounds like a time to invite interested rfc'ers to come and
play.

I think I am going to start a project while I am in the bay area, that
of making some limoncello. There has been an interesting thread on
eGullet about it, and after having some at Readah's, I am seriously
interesting in making some. I have the recipe from eGullet that I
want to try, and also one from one of my cookbooks. I might try both
versions. Want a bottle?

Yes, a few were - I think by Terry. Not all the photographers posted their
pics. I'll have to kick some butt next year. I'm in charge of nipping at
people's heels, so I am sorry that I didn't do my job better this year. We
had a really good time and the food, even though Christine D. and Kay H.
were not able to be there, was fabulous! We always tend to be laid-back here
in Sandy Eggo, but perhaps we have become a little too slack.

I will be there next year, if there is another one! Readah and I are
already planning on it....and trying to get the rest of the Phoenix
contingent over there.
And if anyone wants to make Limoncello along with me, to taste test it
all...that would be wonderful! I might have two varieties in time for
the cook-in next year!

There will almost certainly be one as usual in early June. I do hope you can
be there - you are a fabulicious cook. Readah and her most excellent husband
are not slouches either!
