Default 2004 PHOENIX COOK-IN - SATURDAY, OCTOBER 2ND

The Phoenix r.f.c. contingent is please to officially announce the 2004
Phoenix Cook-In to be held on Saturday, October 2nd, from 1:00 p.m. 'til
?

readah has graciously offered to host the event in her new Scottsdale
home, and I think we can unofficially consider this an r.f.c.
housewarming!

Our planning committee - readah, Christine Dabney, Blair Houghton, and I
- would like to cordially invite and encourage all you Phoenicians,
Arizonans, Californians, etc., etc., etc., to join in and celebrate the
end of a hot summer with tantalizing food and drink, limited only by
your imagination. We're placing no limitations on what you may conjure
up!

To kick off the cook-in we have planned an outing on Friday evening,
October 1st, to the ever popular and highly touted Pizza Bianco in
central Phoenix. Word has it that both Peter Reinhardt, "American
Pie", and Jeffrey Steingarten, "The Man Who Ate Everything", are calling
this the "best pizza in America".

Never to leave a cabbage unshredded, we are having a coleslaw tasting
during the cook-in on Saturday. This may settle some of the many
questions and options raised during the recent r.f.c. coleslaw thread.

We also welcome other ideas for tastings that you think would be fun and
delicious!

Last, but not least, all interested parties should send their email
address to . readah will maintain a mailing list in
order to provide updates and other pertinent information.

Maps, addresses, phone numbers, suggested accommodations, etc., will be
available to all participants.

You may also direct any questions, comments, suggestions, etc., to any
of our planning committee members.

We hope to see you all there!

Okay, I'm bummed. I missed the San Diego (Poway) cook-in
and now I have to miss the Phoenix (Scottsdale) cook-in.
I must have done something very bad. :-( I would once
again offer to take anybody unwanted extra frequent flyer
miles off their hands at absolutely no cost to them, but
alas I already have plans for a vacation in VT that week.
My sister is flying in from Montana on the 29th and we are
leaving on October 1st to drive up to Vermont where we'll stay
for a week in a timeshare in West Dover. I'm afraid I will
have to choose Vermont over Phoenix in spite of dozens of
offers of free air miles that are sure to come flooding in in
response to my generous offer above. So are you guys going
to try all my cole slaw recipes and let me know if you like
them better than Squeaks' recipe (which I'm sure you will)?
;-)

Kate, happy about Vermont, bummed about Phoenix

Hmm..I guess I had better google for your recipes... I have my own to
contribute as part of the side by side tastings...

Maybe the attendees could make some of yours? Then we could have a
real contest...

Hm...we haven't decided what to do about the winners here....any
ideas folks?

Wish you could come, Kate!!!!

I'd love to join you. But I'll be getting ready to hit St. Louis just a few
days after that and we'll be driving back to Forrest Park for the Ceilidh on
10/8. Then John's birthday is 10/9 but we are gonna be working all that day
when the Scottish games are going on (tossing the caber and all that). I
had a beautiful Quaich sent over from Scotland for his birthrday. It is
outstanding! When we're done working I'm going to present it to him with a
good draught of single malt when we get back to the hotel.

Have fun at your cook in

Blessed be,
Jill

You probably did, but we won't tell! ;-)

Well, Kate, what can I say... There will always be a Vermont, but there
will only be 10/2/2004 Phoenix Cook-In!

I have a feeling by the time we've made all the coleslaws we've been
talking about, we could easily start a coleslaw factory. Say, what was
that address you'll be at in Vermont?

We'll raise a fork of coleslaw in your honor. Maybe I'll try one of
your recipes. I don't think I've ever made coleslaw, this may be a
first for me. I was going to give Dimitri's recipe a try-- he brought
that to the 2002 Sandy Eggo Cook-In. Hmm, so many choices.

computer here now.

Thanks, Christine. Me, too!

Oh, well, I'll just have to settle for Vermont.
Hope we have good color this year. Then I can lord
that all over you guys in Arizona. ;-)

I wonder if Fedex has rules about mailing cole slaw?

Yeah, but how would I get there? Not to mention,
my sister had already booked the timeshare and she's
counting on me to drive us up there.

I suppose I could drive to Phoenix if I could afford
that much gas. ;-)

My first Maine Coon cat was born and bred in Scottsdale!
I visited the Phoenix area for the first time when I drove
there from L. A. to pick up my kitten in January of 1976!
(I didn't want to have her shipped by air since I lived
so close.) It was over !00 degrees when I was there!
It was January!!!! Anyway, I had my darling Grummitch
for 18 1/2 years. She was a great cat!

Um, why? We'll be at the Dover Watch at Mt. Snow in
West Dover, VT. Are you going to send me some cook-in
goodies? ;-)

And practice I will. Though I'm not a great fan of mayo-- that's
probably why I don't make coleslaw much. :-)

Brocolli & potatoes (french-fried or mashed). Weird, huh?

And practice I will. Though I'm not a great fan of mayo-- that's
probably why I don't make coleslaw much. :-)

Fly-by-night; bring sister!

That's a big drawback. The cheapest I've seen is $1.879

It's wonderful to have them for so long! It's always so sad to lose
them. We have three right now; one 12, one 6, and one just 4 months. We
will be getting the 4 month-old's brother next week.

No, just coleslaw. Sorta like "Fruit of the Month" Club, but all 12
samples in one box! :-)

Oh, my god! You need serious psychological help! ;-)

Ah, well, then you should make either the Sam's sensational
wilted slaw or my mother's sour cream slaw. I posted both
recipes, although the sour cream one is not an actual
recipe as it's never before been written down. And
the Doc's Garlic slaw only has a smidgeon of mayo in
it - it's mostly cream.
