Memorial Day is this Monday.
Let us never forget what it's all about:

I have to work so I won't be 'q'ing this year,

Memorial Day 2010 is *next* Monday, May 31. This (coming) Monday is
May 24.

Monday next (5/24/10) is Victoria Day in Canada. Memorial Day is Monday,
5/31/10, a week after that.

Saying "This coming Monday" is not the same as saying "This Monday"
(which was 5 days ago). "Next Monday" is 2 days from now.

I think those Stupid Pills of Om's are really kicking in full bore
now. Her posts real like the Old Jill's, just worse. Flying off
the handle for no reason, not reading posts in her haste to be
self-centered, and then posting stuff like this...

I mean that all constructively, of course.

Thank you Om, here in the south we use Memorial Day to honor all of our
dead. In the family cemetery in Arkansas we used to always go out the
day before and mow, decorate the graves and then on Memorial Day we
would have maybe two hundred relatives of the dead there to eat a meal
together and remember the ones gone on before us. Many of our dead were
veterans, including all the wars from the Revolutionary War to present
day wars. The rest were family, loved ones who went to join them.

That cemetery holds nine generations of my mother's family and mine.

In my exposure to the language, "This Monday" can mean eather
the most recent Monday in the past, or the closest Monday in
the future. The verb tense in the surrounding sentence will
tell you which.

What's more ambiguous is "Next Monday", which can mean either of
the following two Mondays to many people.

It's also my wife's ... Jill's ... birthday. I'm giving her an ipod Nano and
chocolate and 20 one-ounce pieces of silver bullion. "Every Kiss Begins With

I the case of my response, Om referred to Memorial Day as being "this"
Monday.
Since it is an event on the calendar, "this" Monday means "this coming"
Monday.
I corrected the statement by stating that the event is the "next" Monday
after that.

What are you cooking?

I expect to be in transit on Memorial Day. If I am still home, the menu will

What a disrespectful slob you are. Composing a "menu" on a picture of
a cemetary. You'll probably whip out a hibachi and grill your
"meatloaf burgers" (sounds ****ing disgusting, BTW) right there, you
odious oaf.

really? 'this monday' seems to me to be the one approaching. the most
recent monday in the past would be 'last monday' or 'this last monday.'
english can be subtle, but not so in this case.

Today is Sunday. If I say "next Monday I am going to New York"
I probably mean eight days from now; otherwise I would have
said "tomorrow I am going to New York".

Sure, call a lawyer. :-)

According to the menu, we're having leftovers for lunch. Breakfast is
peach coffee cake and leftovers. I have no hope for dinner. My wife is
cooking for 50 people all weekend, starting Friday night.

I'd like to have your recipe for grill-smoked baked beans.
I've never been a big bean eater, yet once in a while try some that
others have prepared and am amazed at how good they are. So I'm clueless
at how to make a good batch.

Yeah, me too! Wanting the recipe, that is. My mom's homemade baked beans
are to die for but I'm always curious to try others and these pique my
interest.

There's no real recipe to it: Just doctor baked beans however you like, put
them into a shallow oven-safe pan, and put the pan on a smoky covered grill
for about 20 minutes.

I doctor canned beans with whatever I think will complement the other items
in the menu. To accompany the meatloaf burgers I'd do this:

Put some dry mustard, onion chunks, and cider vinegar into a blender. Blend
until onion is just about liquefied, adding mustard or vinegar to get a
thick liquid consistency. Allow to sit for at least a couple hours (or up to
a day and a half; the mustard will mellow considerably in that time). Add
black pepper and brown sugar; taste for balance: The mixture should taste
sweet, sour, peppery, and sharp equally. Stir mixture into canned baked
beans and pour into an oven-safe pan. Cook on a smoky grill (I like oak for
this) for twenty minutes or so. If you want, you can add cheese in the final
five minutes, but you don't want to add it much earlier lest the cheese suck
up too much of the smoke and become bitter.
