Any 'proper' cooking is done in a 'proper' > electric oven. It appears there's a significant difference between microwave ovens sold in the UK and the US. Here in the US, I've never even seen a model that has such limited controls as you describe, regardless of price. As I stated in an earlier post, most units here in the US have almost infinite timing control from 1 second to 99:99 minutes.
