I'm doing my best to not cook in the house due to the heat (we nave no a/c) so
I have been using my gas grill quite a bit lately. However, there are times when I would like to cook things in a skillet or a pot. (however I am learning the fine art of cooking in foil lol) Anyway ... would a cast iron skillet work for eggs, stir fry, etc? What brand and where can I find one if that will work. Thanks, Kat ~Kat "The early bird gets the worm, the second mouse gets the cheese." |

For frying eggs on a grill, or anywhere for that matter, a carbon steel pan works better than cast iron, it heats faster, is more responsive, and since it's way lighter it is far more user friendly on ones wrists, plus their handles are at least twice as long, keeps from singing ones hands. I personally don't see any benefit to cast iron cookware anymore, it's like from the stone age, only a tiny step up from cooking on flat rocks heated by the sun. Carbon steel pans are inexpensive, have the same non-stick properties of cast iron... if you'd rather, simply use a small flat bottomed wok to fry on your grill, that's what I use. I got rid of all my cast iron cookware aeons ago, only cast iron cookware I still have is a mold for baking a gingerbread house.... I used it once, about 25 years ago.... only held on to it figuring one day I may have grand children, which should be soon, since I've been informed a little girl pumpkin is due for Halloween.... okay, gingerbread house mold with recipe dug out of the pantry and at the ready. ---= BOYCOTT FRANCE (belgium) GERMANY--SPAIN =--- ---= Move UNITED NATIONS To Paris =--- ********* "Life would be devoid of all meaning were it without tribulation." Yeah I like that one too, you could practice Bennihana cooking on it.
The first link I posted didn't work but if you go to Bass Pro Shops website abd do a search for griddles there are cheaper ones. -RP |

For Indirect heat, a cast iron pan probably won't get hot enough to do much good. If you have a side burner, probably the best thing to use is a wok. There are several that can be used on a grill or on a side burner. Of the types of pans that can be used on a grill-they should be carbon steel: One has a solid bottom and holes on the sides, another has holes on the bottom and sides, a third is solid all around. |

I recognize you from rec.food.preserving ![]() burner on your grill? If not, a cast iron skillet would work fine for eggs. I'm not sure of a brand as I got mine at a yard sale and there are no brand markings. I would use a wok for the stir fry though. For neat ideas cooking in foil check out: http://reynoldskitchen.com. I routinely cook both beef and pork roasts wrapped in foil on the grill in the summer. I've also baked bread, made quiche, and done pizza on the grill. If you do a google for camping recipes, it is amazing what you can cook on the grill. |
