Default Teflon flu

Just in the event anyone cares, on tonight's 20/20 they have a piece
on cooking in teflon pans.

And while I'm at it, the current Christmas issue of Consumer Reports
covers a number of kitchen appliances.

According to the announcement, Dupont has known about this for many
years. They claim that the Teflon can never get hot enough in normal
use, which has been proved as being wrong.

Did you see the clip where the spokeswoman said, the effects are
temporary. How temporary. Two days. That's temporary? Hello, I
think most people cook at *least* every two days. Besides, who
wants flu symptoms for even five minutes. Of course I will have to
wait to see the whole show.

Perhaps the effects are not felt by everyone or maybe inhaling the
fumes from overheated Teflon doesn't happen to people who cook in a well
ventilated environment. I have been using Teflon coated cookware for many
years (mostly Silverstone) and I don't recall ever feeling any ill
effects, but than again, I tend to avoid overheating my cookware.

Barbara Walters is talking about this right now on 20-20 as I am writing
this posting.

well it can kill pet birds and has done so. so I guess it is not really
temporary for everyone (G)

Dump TEFLON buy cast iron. It's not only better, it's better for you.

I'm betting that it is the "old news" that we've heard for years. Bird owners
can't keep birds in the part of the house where the kitchen is if they use Teflon
pans.
Most of the non-stick pans today are Silverstone, Inovexx (sp) or similar, not
actually containing Teflon

Oh, I'm quite certain. It's just that people keep poo pooing the
claims and it looked as if they actually tested it.

I do think I have a teflon pan, it was one of a set of two. The
smaller one gave off awful fumes when bananas with brown sugar
was cooked in it. I tossed it and bought an All Clad to replace
it. Cost a bundle, but I don't worry about the surface with metal
untensils. I should look up what the nonstick coating is made of.

Teflon. Applied using a 2-step process to make it stick
to the pan better, and to make it bumpy so it sticks to
the food less, than a flat coating of Teflon. But it's
still teflon.

I still won't use metal utensils in mine.

And the only time I ever got a teflon pan hot enough to
react with anything, the coating melted and I threw it out.

Anyone else heard that this year's flu vaccine is not for the strain
that is showing up?

All that pain and suffering for naught! (unless you got the inhaled kind)

Actually, Silverstone is a variation on Teflon.
