Lots of supermarkets have signs up saying "Sorry, no cheques (that's how we spell it) accepted". And I can't remember when last I saw anybody pay by check at our supermarkets - debit/credit cards are the 'norm'; hardly ever see anybody paying cash for a 'big' grocery cart's worth either. -- Cheers Chatty Cathy |

Around here (Boston area) you can pay by check but I think you are also getting an approval in the same manner as a credit transaction. I would guess if the retailer has not upgraded their equipment they are putting themselves at risk to bad check writers. I don't pay for groceries by check but I do pay by check at the doctor's office or dentist. In both cases, the check is run through a scanner and an approval code appears, similar to a credit card scanner. I usually pay for groceries with my amex so I can get the points/miles and I pay it off every month, so I am not carrying a balance. I use the amex for anything I would normally pay for with cash like groceries and gas. I think I have a couple utilities paid with amex too. So far we've gone to Spain, San Diego and Mexico for free so it has been worth it. Tracy |

I've used about 10 of them in the last five years (and none of them for food/restaurants/groceries). I haven't seen those 'check scanners' in the supermarkets in RSA (South Africa) - but they may well exist. Paying by check can be expensive here for the account holder (they charge a percentage of the amount on the check for 'processing', depending which bank/type of account one holds) - so a lot people go for the debit card option (a.k.a 'cash card' as Barb pointed out in another thread) - or credit cards. Heh. I had to make a cash deposit into my bank account a month or two back - and my bank charged me some ridiculous amount for doing so! Jayzuz - I'm putting (cash) money in there, not taking any out! Mumble, mumble, grumble.... (and it's the same with all the banks 'round here - they prefer folks to use 'on-line banking', it would seem). As for the 'points system' when using a credit card - there are a couple of similar schemes here, and yes, sometimes it's worth cashing them in (pun intended). -- Cheers Chatty Cathy |

Over here it's mostly cash or credit cards (in this order). There aren't even signs about cheques since nobody uses them in daily life. Cheers, Michael Kuettner |

In both cases, the check is > run through a scanner and an approval code appears, similar to > a credit card scanner. I have a working rule that I pay by credit card if possible when the bill is likely to exceed USD 10. I do not carry a checkbook or a debit card. Most of my larger payments are made online, including the monthly credit card bills. There are one or two services that seem to have trouble with online payment, notably charitable contributions, garbage (we choose to have individual contracts in my neighborhood) and those like the newspaper delivery where I have not found a satisfactory online method of including a tip. As far as cash is concerned, I use bills and only carry those coins accumulated during the day. The coins go into a jar and are paid into the bank via its no-charge counting machine once in a while. My only deviation from a no-coin policy is that I have an old 35mm film cassette in the car, filled with the quarter coins that many parking meters still require. I have a sensor (or whatever it is?) on the windshield for road tolls. Oh yes, another thing, I have a non-contact pay card for public transportation. -- James Silverton Potomac, Maryland Email, with obvious alterations: not.jim.silverton.at.verizon.not |

ChattyCathy > wrote: > http://www.recfoodcooking.com > > MCINL= My Choice Is Not Listed I used to pay with cash whenever possible, then by check. When I started using Bank of America when I refinanced (BOA now pretty much owns me financially until the morgage is paid off which won't be for much longer), I finally got my first debit card. I'm careful to use my ledger to keep track of transactions just like I did by check. I've also since dumped all my gas cards and use the debit at the pump. I like it. :-) -- Peace! I still tend to use cash at restaurants tho' when we go out for lunch. Easier to leave a tip if nothing else. -- Peace! Om Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. Around here now, they are strict about arresting and prosecuting for "theft by check". It's treated as a shoplifting charge and they are ruthless about enforcing it. I'm glad. <eg> -- Peace! I want the manager. You call over the manager, who takes maybe 10 minutes to get there the whole time the customer and the 8,000 others who lined up behind him/her to 'see' what is going on all mumble and curse you under their breath. Manager comes over, makes a big deal out of explaining the store doesn't take American Express Customer: Why didn't this &&*##3 tell me that in the first place You, smiling through your teeth as the manager stands there glowering at you ask the customer for remaining $112.79. Customer: I want to put $50 0n my Discover card. You key in $50, swipe the card, that will be $62.79. Customer pulls out check book, 'You do take checks don't you'...... You tell customer with proper identification, yes Customer writes check for $50. You ask for ID Customer empties bag on belt, which by the way is still moving, cash, change, service termination letters, pictures, lifesavers, sanitary products and birth control fall out. Customer hands you eviction notice as ID. You tell customer that although the address on the eviction notice and the check is the same, she doesn't look like Bubba Cartwright, does she have anythng with HER picture on it.......finally she finds an ID that is expired, store rules state it has to be valid. Customer gives you death glare over this. Finally finds current Parolee ID with picture. Scan (frank) the check....register states too many transactions already. Needs manager.....Manager formerly breathing over your shoulder walked away to 'say 'Hey' to another manager and scratch his balls in public. Begrudgingly comes back over....overrides denial. That will be $12.79. Customer starts counting out dollar bills, not the larger ones bumping along on the conveyor, but from a wad she pulled out of the waistband of her underpants. Customer counts out $9.00 You take $9.00 (praying there is hand sanitizer under your register). That will be $3.79. Customer reaches even lower in her undergarments and pulls out a ratty sock filled with change. Counts out $2.37, mostly in nickles, pennies and lint. You tell her she is .42 short. Customer say's 'I aint got no more money (money is still bouncing on conveyor). what can I take off, and starts pawing thru the bags. Another customer three people behind, throw .42 on the belt and asks why 'I couldn't have covered it for the poor woman'. The 'poor woman' smirks at me while I ring up ALL the transactions to have her say "I want your name, I want to file a permanent complaint on you and get you fired' As tempting as is is to say 'go ahead, then I won't have to deal with inbred morons like you', you smile at the next customer who says.... 'Well, why didn't you cover it for her' Answer is: 'She is the third person today to do this, and I don't get paid enough to subsidize everyone who comes in this store..... At end of the day, manager asks to speak with you, telling you how rude you were to the customer, he gave her a complimentary $10 gift card (you think, oh boy, another layer of payment) and tells you if you don't stop this behavior, you will be terminated. AND your register had best balance at the end of the day. So, if you get in line and the cashier looks fried, or the little old lady in front of you ONLY has a checkbook in hand. Thank your god and that you have a debit/credit card and that you aren't working the register when the above mentioned customer comes in.....and believe me....every store gets at least one of these a day..... -ginny |

Of course there's another reason I don't go there, the food is always just about to hit expiry date, the produce is picked over badly, and the help is snotty to boot. Actually we now only have one store that caters to them, the other went broke and had to close. I suspect the only reason the one is still open is that there are some underhanded dealings in booze, tobacco and bananas* going on for the Star card. *Bananas aren't grown in the US and therefore aren't available on the public assistance card. The store that went broke did so when they still had food stamps, seems they were cashing in more food stamps than the total of food sold. State shut them down for a few days that turned into a week and had padlocked the doors. Electric company turned off the power, everything in the store went bad, ultimately building was demolished as they couldn't get it clean again. Owner of store is still in the hoosegow as is his manager. |

I think most of those perks will be dropping by the wayside and I'll switch back to debit card (or cash if they start charging for card use). I get 3% back on gas on my Costco American Express which usually means its a better deal to use my card than to buy gas at the 'cash' price they charge now. Jon Jon |

My AMEX has been a lifesaver too because not only does it keep me "honest" since I have to pay it off each month but it also comes with one of those "locked out, run out of gas, tow 50 miles" type auto club plans. My son has had to use it twice this past year alone so the annual fee has been worth it to me. |

Thank your god and that you > have a debit/credit card and that you aren't working the register when the > above mentioned customer comes in.....and believe me....every store gets > at least one of these a day..... I've been behind that above mentioned customer. They are as bad as a coupon shopper who waits to check to see if they have a coupon until after it is all rung up. I once waited 20 MINUTES while a lady sorted them after all was done then wanted to look over her purchases. (at the point where she asked to have some things unbagged the manager pulled her aside and had another line opened. Thankfully he insisted we all get in there in order so me just behind the lady wasnt at the back of the new one). Rant on! Hello fellow coupon shopper! Do that *while* shopping, then group them and pass them to the cashier right at the start as you unload and warn if they have one 'on the can'. I tend to warn right away, 'oh the crescent rolls have a coupon on them once we see'em' and no more is needed. Gosh, I'm horrible. I use coupons, write checks, and buy 40% of my groceries that have to be weighed (fresh stuff). I promise: 1) I will have my check ready to go except amount unless there was no line so no time to do it. I have any added info on it already like work number or whatever your place requires unless i am a first time shopper there and got caught astray with a needed addition. 2) I will hand you my coupons which will have already been checked for expiration and that if a companion item was needed, it's in the cart and will come out if not next to it, real close. 3) I will warn you if a box or can has a peel off 'coupon' I plan to use. If missed on scanning, I will use it next time vice bug you. 4) I will put my goodies on the cart so that the 'must weigh' items are all together and the 'prefer bagged together cold or frozen things are together. I pre-stack my cart this way so this takes no extra time as I filter it to your conveyer belt. (You arent waiting for me to filter my cart ever). 5) I won't put the fragile stuff on the belt til last so it can be bagged neatly on top and not block the bottom as the rest is bagged. You might blanch as I came up, but you'd find I'm actually faster than the card scanning sort. Oh, and if i'm on foot with a pull cart and backpack, you'll find I want no bagging and just ask you to tuck it back in the cart and I'll move to the side when we are done and tuck my own stuff away. Easier for me and unfamiliar likely to you ;-) Fair nuff? I miss anything? |

Only in Sasebo Japan, where people commonly shop on foot (baskets and backpack) or with a bicycle (backpack and pull cart) would I let the bagger tuck my purchases away. (common tip, 1$ per backpack, 1$ per paperbag sized puill cart. 3$ total if kidlit was along with her backpack loaded by weight to be light enough for a 7-10 YO to easily handle). It's a unique situation and might be relevant to others overseas from the USA standpoint. Not sure how many here have ever done that although some have. |

She always had coupons that were out of date as well.....occassionally she paid in the aforementioned manner. I never minded the coupons, I rather liked seeing how much someone could save and when we occassionally had a 'coupon martyr' - you know the one who announces loudly after hanging up the line...."I saved $5 on my order".....I would say saccarinely sweetly....'oh, that's nothing, I had a lady just an hour ago who saved $325.00 and her order took less time than yours, it's amazing what you can do with coupons these days'....... My experience with coupon users however has been positive. Most have their coupons out and ready and if not 'swiping the card' tell me up front there will be a different way of paying. -ginny |

Gee, after the check writing diatribe, I'm surprised anyone admitted to utilizing that method. For those who answered, 'I shop daily", how are THEY paying - with wampum? I find the debit card is fastest - you swipe, mumble "Debit - nothing back" and you're on your way. |

And you don't have to kill yourself to get out of anyone's way. Any appearance that you're aware you're not the only person in the place goes a long way, and you do have the right to check out your stuff and pay for it in less than the speed of light. My debit card is actually made up as a visa card, and many places (such as my Dr's office and the liquor store) ring it up as a credit card transaction, but it comes out of the checking account, so this "new law" might affect me? -- Peace! It is a shame, but these people don't even have a sense of embarrassment, or consideration for what they are doing. |

I get 1% or sometimes 2% back in the form of Cabela's store credit, plus around Christmas time they send me coupons for free guns and stuff. :-) Bob |
