We had some fresh ground beef to use up and I wanted a change so I
made sloppy joes and I put a bit of Italian sausage in for flavour. They were yummy! And we had the leftover salad from last night to go with them - it had strawberries, cucumber, tomato, baby greens, parmesan flakes and toasted almonds, and it tasted okay if a little soggy from sitting in the fridge overnight. Then I wanted dessert, so I made a batch of scones and we topped them with lemon curd leftover from John's birthday cake last weekend, and strawberry sauce leftover from last night's cheesecake. Add a cup of Sleepytime tea for me, and a coffee for DH, made in his shiny new three-cup coffee press, and we were both very happy. |

I made boiled eggs for the 7 YO, scrambled eggs for the wife, and OE eggs for myself. I cut up 1/4-1/3" cubes of potatoes, parboiled them, then fried them in peanut oil. I also sliced an avocado that my wife and I shared. --Bryan http://www.flickr.com/photos/15522299@N08/?saved=1 |

Got a 7 lb. turkey breast at the local grocer from the 'used meat' bin....(69 cents/lb). Cooked that with smashed spuds, corn. -ginny |

We were in NYC today, and ate at Ray's Famous Pizza in the Village. I had a small salad with Asian ginger dressing and croutons. The rest of the gang demolished various pizzas. maxine in ri |

We had: - Broccoli greens which had been slow-cooked with bacon grease and garlic. These were served in bowls so we could enjoy the pot likker along with the greens. - Slender carrots which were partially steamed then glazed with reduced apricot nectar. - Petrale sole meunière (seasoned with salt and pepper, dusted with flour, then cooked in brown butter and served with lemon wedges). - German butterball potatoes which were partially boiled, then cut in half and finished cooking cut-side-down in the pan used to cook the fish. I pureed an onion and a couple cloves of garlic, added salt, pepper and cumin and smeared it on the chicken and in the cavity and let it sit for an hour. Then it went on the BBQ and was basted with melted butter. We had that with salad, fresh asparagus and fresh rolls. Dessert was rhubarb custard pie. |

I had 3 turkey drumsticks in the fridge that my wife had
found on sale earlier in the week, so around noon I put them into a brine and into the downstairs fridge. While we were out shopping we found a small rack of pork ribs in the marked down meat section, so we bought that. Once home, I installed the 4 new burners that I had ordered for the grill, gave it a general clean up, then smoked the turkey and pork both for about an hour to hour and a quarter. When the meat was up to fully cooked temps I cooked 2 handsful of egg noodles and some frozen green beans. We ate 2 of the drumsticks last night, and saved the 3rd for somebody's lunch. The ribs I had put on a dry rub before cooking, then added a barbeque sauce and wrapped it in foil after cooking. That will be dinner tonight, probably accompanied by rice and some mixed vegetables. The turkey was very good. I sliced a sample off the pork and it tasted a little too spicy, but I'm hoping it will mellow a bit with the sauce and sitting overnight in the fridge. I used John Henry's Chisholm Trail Rub and probably overdid it a bit. Live, cook, and learn . . . ;-) Bill Ranck Blacksburg, Va. |

And we had the leftover salad from last night to go (snip) We are at Chili's last night on our way home from the four-day Festival of Nations in St. Paul (www.festivalofnations.com) where I'd spent about 40 hours showing peoples how I decorate Easter eggs. We had barbecued ribs, fries, and a couple raspberry margaritas. The ribs weren't bad but the noise level was ridiculous, abetted by a table of five next to us that was too damned loud. JAYzuzz! During the four days at the Festival, I enjoyed chicken salad and artichoke salad I brought with me (because I was alone in my space on Thursday), an eclair, some kolachky, some coffee, some gyoza, some mandu, a ham sammich on a baguette, some shicken wings, a gyros, a coupla arepas, coffee, an eclair, some vanilla yogurt with some orange sherbet (DIY creamsicle), a croissant with ham and cheese and spinach leaves, some really flat cookies with a buttercream filling, maybe another eclair. ;-\ For the first time in probably 15 years, I did not have any tabbouleh from the church laidies-run Lebanese booth. Burp. Tonight I made a tuna-mac salad that would have been improved by the inclusion of some salt. The tuna (TJ solid albacore) was dry. -- -Barb, Mother Superior, HOSSSPoJ http://web.me.com/barbschaller - good news 4-6-2009 "What you say about someone else says more about you than it does about the other person." |

We had those beef back ribs (James made them, but I won't say how he did it, because I might be booed off the group), and they were wonderful. I made macaroni salad and roasted beets/asparagus/onions to go with them. All very goodl. Serene -- 42 Magazine, celebrating life with meaning.
