Default Don't Call It Swine Flu !!!

Pork producers upset about media calling it "Swine Flu".

http://business.theglobeandmail.com/.../Business/home

I suggest renaming it "The Other White Meat Flu". :-)

Indeed it is unfair to blame the flu upon pigs, birds,
or anyone other than sniffling people who don't stay
out of public places and don't wash their hands.

Pigs get blamed for a lot of stuff that isn't their fault.

If a Muslim contracts swine flu, will Allah keep them from the seventy
virgins?

They should be. The last time I something from Taco Bell was years ago.
I had picked up a beef burrito after an afternoon shift. It tasted okay.
I went home and went to bed and woke up around 5 am feeling like I was
going to explode.

Pigs don't speak English. You always blame it on the guy who doesn't
speak English.

In pigs' defense. they didn't put themselves in factory farms, which
is hypothesized to be a causative factor in the genesis of this
strain.

They want to call it the H1N1 flu. I don't know why they can't call
it the Mexican flu - after all, in 1918, the pandemic was Spanish
flu. And this one started in Mexico with a 5-year-old.

We stopped calling one type the Asian Flu, and started calling it
avian flu. The Muslims and some Jews are upset, since swine are
abhorrant to their dietary laws. Some idiots seem to think they can
avoid this iteration of the flu by avoiding pork products.

Can we find any more misinformation to spread? How about reminding
folks of the vaccine what was it, 20 years ago, for the last outbreak
of swine flu? You know, the one that killed a number of people.

Which one of us had that lovely tagline about the Internet being a
drunken librarian?

We've put up info on our site (http://foodforu.ca/) about the human
influenza originating in Mexico which has been dubbed even by the
World health Organization at http://www.who.int/en/ as swine
influenza.

Mis-information causes alot of problems, the WHO is the place to get
credible information on this outbreak of human influenza.

Speaking of that:

Our local FOX station has been running regular updates containing all
manner of misinformation. I got fed up (OB food) with the station's
endless harangue about 159 confirmed swine flu deaths in Mexico
yesterday, and called them up during their evening broadcast. Whoever it
was that answered the phone insisted that the confirmed flu death toll
was 159, even when I referred him to the WHO website and read off the
statistics to him that showed only 26 confirmed swine flu cases and a
mere seven deaths. He laughed when I urged him to check WHO stats, and
said to me... yes, he really said that he'd rather trust the Mexican
government reports because, in so many words, they're there as it
happens and they know what's going on in their country. He also
maintained that WHO "gets it's information late" and related that the US
government had elevated the pandemic alert to Level 5 but that WHO was
still at Level 4, and told me that I must be mistaken when I told him
that WHO had also raised the level to 5.

Throughout the interlude, I was reminded countless times of about the
futility of arguing with idiots.

Before I hung up, I said to the man that I know he works for FOX and
that this is a FOX broadcast, but that they should at least *try* to use
vetted data and not promulgate misinformation and panic. I also
suggested that they try reporting *both* Mexican government and WHO
figures. The man laughed and told me to have a good evening, and I'm
certain that will be the end of it forever.

Musta been the same misinformation that CNN and HLN were sending out
too.... It wasn't until yesterday (I believe) that anyone tried to
correct the death toll numbers in Mexico and the level was raised to
5/6. Mexico has done a very poor job of syndrome surveillance here not
to mention action.

Now VP Joe is telling *his* family to stay off all public airlines.
Nothing like adding gasoline to the fire.... (and how many of us have
private/gumment air planes to take instead?)

I heard a wonderful term the other day that fits 'newscasting' in today's
world perfectly -- "Entertainment News." Isn't that great? It explains the
shouting, fist pounding, hysteria, second-by-second retelling of minor
details. The 'he said, no he really meant to say, what do you think he said

sounds pretty restrained for fox. many of the right-wing blogs are already
proclaiming that the whole thing is being hyped by/was engineered by obama
to seize more power for his socialist state or to distract attention from
his other actions to seize more power for his socialist state.
