Indeed it is unfair to blame the flu upon pigs, birds,
or anyone other than sniffling people who don't stay
out of public places and don't wash their hands.

Pigs get blamed for a lot of stuff that isn't their fault.

Pigs don't speak English. You always blame it on the guy who doesn't
speak English.

In pigs' defense. they didn't put themselves in factory farms, which
is hypothesized to be a causative factor in the genesis of this
strain.

They want to call it the H1N1 flu. I don't know why they can't call
it the Mexican flu - after all, in 1918, the pandemic was Spanish
flu. And this one started in Mexico with a 5-year-old.

We stopped calling one type the Asian Flu, and started calling it
avian flu. The Muslims and some Jews are upset, since swine are
abhorrant to their dietary laws. Some idiots seem to think they can
avoid this iteration of the flu by avoiding pork products.

Can we find any more misinformation to spread? How about reminding
folks of the vaccine what was it, 20 years ago, for the last outbreak
of swine flu? You know, the one that killed a number of people.

Which one of us had that lovely tagline about the Internet being a
drunken librarian?

We've put up info on our site (http://foodforu.ca/) about the human
influenza originating in Mexico which has been dubbed even by the
World health Organization at http://www.who.int/en/ as swine
influenza.

Mis-information causes alot of problems, the WHO is the place to get
credible information on this outbreak of human influenza.

They should be. The last time I something from Taco Bell was years ago.
I had picked up a beef burrito after an afternoon shift. It tasted okay.
I went home and went to bed and woke up around 5 am feeling like I was

Speaking of that:

Our local FOX station has been running regular updates containing all
manner of misinformation. I got fed up (OB food) with the station's
endless harangue about 159 confirmed swine flu deaths in Mexico
yesterday, and called them up during their evening broadcast. Whoever it
was that answered the phone insisted that the confirmed flu death toll
was 159, even when I referred him to the WHO website and read off the
statistics to him that showed only 26 confirmed swine flu cases and a
mere seven deaths. He laughed when I urged him to check WHO stats, and
said to me... yes, he really said that he'd rather trust the Mexican
government reports because, in so many words, they're there as it
happens and they know what's going on in their country. He also
maintained that WHO "gets it's information late" and related that the US
government had elevated the pandemic alert to Level 5 but that WHO was
still at Level 4, and told me that I must be mistaken when I told him
that WHO had also raised the level to 5.

Throughout the interlude, I was reminded countless times of about the
futility of arguing with idiots.

Before I hung up, I said to the man that I know he works for FOX and
that this is a FOX broadcast, but that they should at least *try* to use
vetted data and not promulgate misinformation and panic. I also
suggested that they try reporting *both* Mexican government and WHO
figures. The man laughed and told me to have a good evening, and I'm
certain that will be the end of it forever.

Musta been the same misinformation that CNN and HLN were sending out
too.... It wasn't until yesterday (I believe) that anyone tried to
correct the death toll numbers in Mexico and the level was raised to
5/6. Mexico has done a very poor job of syndrome surveillance here not
to mention action.

Now VP Joe is telling *his* family to stay off all public airlines.

I heard a wonderful term the other day that fits 'newscasting' in today's

The World Health Organization put out up to date information fairly
early in the day yesterday, but they're preaching to a load of ratings
hungry idiots who don't care what the official voices on the matter have
to say if it interferes with spewing whatever keeps viewers tuned in and
turned on.

It's a crying shame when the world's health professionals are forced to
surrender credibility to ratings and politics, and are perceived as
ignorant and inefficient to a public that (let's be honest here)
REQUIRES frenzied hysteria to hold its interest.

Unfortunately there seems to be a large segment of the population that
needs the government to "protect them" and is incapable of critical and
independent thinking. Really sad when you think about it.

It always drives me nuts how they feel they need to "interpret" the news
or statements made by politicians to me because they don't trust how
I'll interpret it myself.
Remember the old adage that journalists just report the news, they

Biden is a liability, I think, for the president, except as
impeachment insurance. It's one thing when someone like me just
blurts out whatever the heck he's thinking, but it's different when
the guy is VP. He's a fundamentally decent man, but I hope that Obama
retires him as a running mate in 2012 in favor of a more careful,
articulate Democrat who also shares his values.
Obama inspires trust from the Left and Center. Biden does not. It's
not policy, but personality. Biden was well respected across the
spectrum as a Senator, and trusted as a voice in foreign policy
decision making in the Senate. He'd make a great Chair for the DNC.
Obama's next VP?

Given the record you Yanks have of being somewhat careless with your
Presidents [we only lose Prime Ministers when they go swimming] it's
not beyond the bounds of possibility that JB could be your next Pres.

Taking his most urgent action to date since cases of swine flu
were first reported, President Barack Obama today ordered an emergency
quarantine of Vice President Joe Biden.

According to President Obama, the vice president will be kept in a
sealed box away from television cameras and microphones “until we are
certain that the danger is passed.”

“There is no clear scientific proof that swine flu can be spread
by television cameras or microphones,” Mr. Obama said. “But it’s
better to be safe than sorry.”

(laugh) I was saying I bet they're sorry they let him out of exile to
talk about this! I haven't seen him in a while, and I don't expect to
for another while.

Vice presidents are now chosen for their unlikability, such that
anyone with assasination aspirations will think twice before offing
the Prez.

I saw the news clip and he was very careful to say it was his opinion.
I'm not happy to fly on airplanes even when there is no problem with
an epidemic because I don't want to breathe recycled air - and I
certainly don't trust their filtration systems in this day and age of
cost cutting.

Joe was put on the ticket with full knowledge that he shoots from the
lip. From what I've seen so far, he says what people are *really*
thinking.

However, swine flu is NOT the reason why I won't go to Mexico. The
ramped up drug war IS. Wake up people!

How about a thought experiment? Lets say you are diagnosed with
something and your doc tells you that the treatment is a course of
"zelarim" for 30 days. It is commonly used but your doc finishes with
"but I wouldn't use that drug on my family". The doc was careful to
point out it was his opinion so would that influence you?

Disclaimer: the example was not meant to infer that Biden has any
knowledge or authority in the subject area (he doesn't) but the American
idol/twitter crowd may not know that.

When Biden was used as the spokesperson for the Democratic Party, I thought
he was little more than a windbag that droned on for no apparent reason.
When I had a few chances to hear him speak off the cuff, I gained new
respect for him. He has some good ideas on foreign policy and how to handle
Iraq too.

my reservations about biden mostly deal with his role in the bankruptcy act
and other goodies thrown to the credit card companies. he was senator from
delaware.

he seems to be a pretty smart guy, though.

"Cheesy" is the word that comes to mind when his glad-handing mug pops up on
the televisor screen...

Too bad Fred Allen isn't still around, he could base a character on Biden,
he'd be a snap to parody...
