Seems more reasonable than letting the eggs age a week before
boiling them.

It just steams eggs...I have a kenmore electric veggie steamer (sears
approx $40 IIRC) that comes with a rice basket, a 2 stackable baskets and
a 10 egg tray. Does more than just eggs can steam veggies, fish, shrimp,
rice... whatever you want steamed. But it doesn't poke a hole in the
shell. It does have a timer. I never tried to poach a egg in it, don't
believe you could.

I find that steaming eggs for about 20 minutes allows for easier shell
removal for hard boiled eggs. I think somebody else tried it out with one
of those bamboo wok steamer dealies with good sucess as well. I've posted
about this before.

Yes I can see that would work if you were very good with your timings. I
am not

What timings?
The timer times it, I just come back when I hear the ding which is the
bell going off indicating that the steamer has just turned off. The
electric veggie steamer fills multiple rolls hence it uses less space
than various stuff that fills only one role.

Mind you I haven't made soft boiled eggs in it and probably never
will...as I like eggs but have little use for soft boiled when I could
get sunny fried, poached or scrambled instead.

Hard boiled eggs are used as lunch snacks, sliced as salad toppings or in
egg salads and being deviled or other uses.

Well yasee, for people like me, there is a wee measuring cup and you put
water in it up to the line that says, hardboiled, softboiled, medium boiled

Oh I have a 3 tier steamer which I use daily anyway) I cook all my
veggies in it.

I got rid of my electric steamer. Just didn't have room for it. I use
the steamer inserts that came with my cookware. That works great for
veggies. Now I'll have to find somewhere to store my egg cooker but it's
much smaller than the steamer.
