When baking a pie crust, it is likely not a good idea to get so
involved in reading a book that it takes the smoke alarm to alert you
to the fact that you just burned the sh*t out of your pie crust.

Invest in some kitchen timers luv. :-)
They have saved me a world of grief and improved my cooking.

I have two of them next to my computer since that used to be my downfall.
Both are 3 channel timers so I can set up to 6 times at once if I need
to. :-)

It's not the setting that gets me, it's the starting. Especially bad
when cooking rice.

Oops! Live and learn. At least all that got burned was the pie crust.
Many years ago, a college friend of mine dozed off one day when he was
home sick with the flu. He awoke to find his kitchen fully involved in
flames and the chicken noodle soup he was heating up was a total loss!

Just as bad is to forget to put on the timer, so you have no idea how
long it's cooked, and to end up making it underdone out of fear you've
overcooked it.

Oh lots of us have done this.. It's more important that u tell us what type of
pie you were planning so we can be overly sympathetic about the burning and do
tell what good book was so good to make you burn your pie crust. Us readers
must know. With me it usually ends up being some stupid human interest piece or
an instruction book for something!! Though I hopelessly burned some spaghetti
sauce a few months ago reading a Nora Roberts Book. Mental note to self made
after that it is important to let husband know what u did BEFORE he scrapes all
the burned stuff from the pot bottom, thus ruining the entire pot of sauce right
before dinner..sigh.

I usually set my timer for the minimum time suggested and check it.
Sometimes it is hard to tell by the crust. I often go by smell. Pie pastry
was a particular smell when it is properly cooked. Please don't ask me to
describe it. Suffice it to say that once the timer as gone and I check the
results I look at the colour and smell, set the timer for a few more
minutes and then stay close and use my nose.

I always use the oven timer for my baking, but if I am involved in
something I take a wind up or the base of my digital thermometer/timer to
with me. It's amazing how many diversions can turn your oblivious to the
sound of a timer in another room.

Too many electronic beepers. My oven, washer, and dryer all sound
moderately similar, so when I'm at the computer, I can't tell if the
rolls are done, the wash is done, or the clothes need to be hung up!

And try to remember, the smoke alarm is NOT a good timer when
cooking<g>

Poor you! Barbara gave me a hard time yesterday, because first I went
out to buy a pound of fresh peas for $4.99, shelled them, mixed them
with the mushrooms I had sliced and sauteed and put the pot over a low
flame. It was not low enough, I burned the whole thing and Marcel
really does not like peas that look and taste like pellets of coal, so I
told Barbara about it. She had some mighty nasty things to tell me. (

What kind of pie would it have been?

Barbara, You wrote that I was mean for feeding Marcel burned food. You
also insinuated that I especially should not have turned fresh peas into
charcoal and hinted that frozen peas are less expensive, thus better
suited for cremation.

Unfortunately, this drama played out on Instant Messenger and I
cannot retrieve our conversation. (

margaret, darhlink, we still love you.....besides, if Marcel has any
complaints tell him that a little charcoal is good for the digestion (health
food stores sell this in capsule form as a digestive aid). Besides, never
mind the Jam Queen, she just had crunchy brownies, so she's not in a good
frame of mind.

Thank you, Ginny. Marcel is going through hell with dental work right
now and the little charcoal pellets did not help the root canal work.

Your kind word sure helped me, though. MS
