It turners out that they have a store about an hour away so I checked it out a two weeks ago. I wasn't all that impressed. There were some interesting high-end frozen foods, but I seldom eat frozen prepared food. At TJs, the clerks kept asking if they could help, which was OK, but after a while I found it annoying. I live a few minutes from 4 large supermarkets and about 30 minutes from an enormous market that carries about anything imaginable from live fish to imported "ice-cream" made from ox bile. There is a Wild Oats market 15 minutes away should I decide to pay a king's ransom for organic carrots or a slice of arugula and tofu pizza. |

![]() I have a Trader's nearby. Because it is convenient, I buy maple syrup, dried fruits, cheese, jam, pasta, balsamic vinegar, olive oil and nuts there. Also the occasional bottled sauce or frozen dessert. I've compared prices with others available in the area, and Trader's comes out the winner. If I had to travel too far out of my way, the savings wouldn't be worth it. --Lia |

I was excited when I heard that TJ's was opening up just 5 minutes from me. After watching the store getting ready to open for months I was so unimpressed. The cheese selection wasn't bad, but the store I do my weekend shopping in has a cheese section almost as big as the whole TJ's store. I guess it's a matter of what's available in your area and if you want to pay a fortune for frozen food. The veggie- munchie stuff seems to be big, but we eat very little of that stuff. Gar |

Excuse me, but Cathy isn't asking what people from outside Vermont think about Trader Joe's. She clearly stated that she wants a TJ's store in Burlington, VT because she likes it and is asking other people FROM HER AREA IN **Vermont**, to join her if they are interested. sundance http://letsgetcooking.proboards21.com/index.cgi |

It clearly states that she wants people to e-mail her directly -- end of story She isn't asking for any discussion or comments, including yours. Likewise there is no prohibition on comments. Some of us are stipid and most of the time we don't understand the posts. Luckily we have posters like you to jump in and clarify. Now that I know what the thread is about let me add that TJ's sucks. Never seen it before. ![]() It's more like what's right with it. IMO. But I'll say what I think is wrong about it, also (just cuz you asked) I was in the checkout line and someone brought some cheese back that was bad. The manager tossed it in a basket that had other cheese items in it that were bad. Nowhere near the "use by" date according to the conversation I overheard. This must happen a lot? On one of my first trips there I bought 6-8 different salsas and chutney type thingies. They all got thrown out. I picked up a bottle of wine to read the label and the way they had them stacked created a domino effect. The display box flipped and the bottles dropped. I had red wine on my shoes, pants, and long coat, all of which were ruined even after professional cleaning. The jerk who came to clean up was rude and took the tude that it was my fault. I left with about a dozen bottles of wine which all got used for cooking because they tasted like shit. This has been discussed here before and some people actually like some of their wines. <gasp> Before I started making my own pizza dough, I'd stop in for the $.69 bag of dough. During one visit, the coolers were empty and running but not cold. I asked what was going on. The rooftop part of the unit had shut down and the alarm had failed. Even though the coolers were warm there was a bunch of pallets of cheese and other perishables on the floor waiting to be shelved. I touched one and it was warm. Hopefully the inside of the boxes was colder. As I left there was a endcap display with something that I found interesting, so I grabbed it and got in line. For the second time in that store my debit card didn't work. Rather than saying they were having problems with cyberland, the bitch said my card was refused. And said it loud enough that everyone in the checkout area of the small store could hear it. I paid cash and left for the last time. I was on a shopping mission that day and used my card before and after TJ's. There was enough money in my account to pay the little tab 100's of times. The clerk was a social misfit. I've read here that their refried beans are good and the veggie chips are tasty. Woohoo. For Joe or Jane Yuppie, who wants to stop in and buy frozen meals to bring home and toss in the oven and claim they can cook, I spoz TJ's might have a use. But not for me. I can buy better for less. But I'm spoiled with what's available here. YMMV Gar |

They even have parking lot shuttles and are installing a monorail! I can't imagine eating much of the stuff they stock. They have a huge departments for cheese and wine and a new aquaculture area where they raise fish. You can go there a hundred times and always find something new.
