The talk Jani (Little Malice) generated about Outback Steakhouse led me to
this. My LLL will be here for a few days next week so I was scouting around for places to go. I didn't know this place was still in business. I haven't been there since around 1976 or so. The Side Porch Steak House in Bartlett, TN. I Googled for restaurants nearby and this popped up. I immediately thought "No, really?! They're still there?" An unpretentious (closed from 12/23-12/25 - what restaurant does that?) steak house. IIRC, wonderful steaks, baked potato, salad. They don't overwhelm you with appetizer selections or soups. They seat from 4:30PM - 8:30 PM, period (according to what I was told when I called). The place is still there in the same location after all these years. The steaks were fantastic. And as I said, the place is unpretentious. They have no plans to turn it into a chain. It's still in the same location after all these years, an old house circa the 1920's converted into a restaurant. Limited seating. When I was 16 or 17 Mom and I would go to the Side Porch for dinner sometimes. I didn't pay attention to nuances about the old house, like the hardwood floors and the crown moldings which I seem to recall now. But it's still in the same place; an old Victorian era house. So if John and I go to the Side Porch I surely will pay attention to the details just because ![]() But most importantly, I recall the steaks were wonderful. The menu was simple. The service was excellent. I'm looking forward to going there again after all these years next week and will report back. Jill |

It would be fun to go back. -- Wayne Boatwright __________________________________________________ One thing about pain: It proves you're alive. |

If not I'll just grab Bettie and Fran and we'll go have an after the holidays dinner, girls night out. Bartlett isn't exactly a hot spot but then again, we're a tad too old for partying, just a nice dinner will suffice ![]() Jill |

Bartlett has grown but much further to the north; this part of Bartlett is still pretty much old Bartlett ![]() There was a lovely old house at the corner across from the Methodist Church at the corner of Stage and Shelby St. that I always wanted to live in. It was situated on a hill and had a wide front porch. My schoolmates and I would walk to the drugstore at the corner and we'd sit on the retaining wall at the bottom of that hill sometimes, drinking pop and wondering who lived there. Never saw anyone go in or out. <shaking herself out of the reverie> Well, we'll see if the steaks at the Side Porch are still as wonderful as my 30 year old memories. Guess they wouldn't still be in business if they weren't! Jill |

Must be a really great place. You haven't been there in what? 30 years. Yep! Really made a great impression. > An unpretentious (closed from 12/23-12/25 - what restaurant does that?) Many that want their employees to have a nice holiday with *their* families? Definately *not* the type of place that you would visit, or the type that would have let you work for them. > But most importantly, I recall the steaks were wonderful. The menu So wonderful that you haven't been there in 30 years. LOL > was simple. The service was excellent. Heh-heh. You disn't work there. > > Jill SamWalls |

A man I dated from 1979 to 1981, then we broke up, then we got back together again about 4 years ago. I have a 50 year old memory of an ice cream stand that was on Poplar near White Station Road. It was called the Tropical Freeze, and every day that had a different array of tropical fruit flavors. At the time, that stretch of Poplar was almost complete rural, particularly as you drove farther out of town. -- Wayne Boatwright __________________________________________________ Of all forms of caution, caution in love is the most fatal. |

Probably right near where Kemmons Wilson's* first house was, which is now a Dixie Cafe. Chicken & Dumplin's is the featured dish on Wednesdays and on Friday, fried or (oooh) broiled catfish, of course! Served with plenty of buttermilk biscuits and corn muffins and a choice of three veggies. YUM! We used to spend our lunch hours trying to figure out if we were eating in the dining room, the living room, the den or one of the bedrooms in that old converted house. There was a fireplace in almost every room and french doors and large picture windows so who can tell? Parking is practically nil around it. You have to get there early! *Kemmons Wilson is the founder of Holiday Inn Corporation... you know, the hotel chain. Jill |
