Of which the essentials are the chili powder, the cumin and the
oregano. If the OP's recipe already calls for garlic or onion there's
no need to put powders in. Likewise, the paprika is mostly there for
color, so it's often not needed. Salt and sugar are best added as
needed for the total recipe rather than what's proportional for a spice
