Default VitaMix blender: Have one?

I have a friend who swears by the VitaMix
blinder/juicer.

They are wanting me to get one. They use it for fresh
veggie juice in the AM, etc

They SWEAR that owning one has made them healthier
people.

What you all think?

I'm a bit confused on that point.... maybe you can
help?

Is the VitaMix a juicer..... or a blender...or both?

Why? I'm a Vitamix owner - I expect it to outlive me, probably. It does
everything I want a blender to do, and is a ton more effective than the
Oster and KitchenAid I owned previously. As a result, it actually gets used
more, which tends to make the price more palatable. So, why did you swear
at yours?

Mine was an earlier model from the 1970s. The steel motor housing was
finished in a hammered enamel finish which flaked and rusted. The
stainless steel blender container was not so "stainless" and developed rust
at the seams. The blender container had a one piece non-removable blade
assembly that had non-submersible bearings which hampered thorough
cleaning, let alone the possibility of disassembly and washing the parts in
the dishwasher. The single knob motor control sometimes sparked when
changing from one speed to another. The spigot on the container dripped
anytime the blender was running.

Was this one a lemon? Perhaps. Would I chance it again? No. I've had an
Oster since giving away the VitaMix and it still runs perfectly, performing
any task I need.

Will the Oster do everything the VitaMix can?

I'm especially interested in getting up in the morning
and throwing some raw carrots, and apple, some juice
into one...and making a juice I can drink.

The vitamix will definitely do that in ways that less powerful (not
necessarily worse or better) units cannot do. The recipes included run the
gamut from good to gross, so you'll have to experiment.

Ok but is there an alternative that will do the same as
the vitamix but cost less?

No, but I didn't need it to.

Sounds like you need a juicer, not a blender. Even with the Vita-Mix
you'll wind up with a thickish sludgy mess, not juice.

Could be..... maybe a juicer is what I do need.

I assumed a VitaMix was a type of juicer

The idea behind the vitamix is that you retain the vitamins etc. in the
pulp. Your choice to buy into that idea or not. It's true that you have to
dilute it with ice; I find the juices quite palatable. You could always run
it through a sieve if you wanted to remove the solids, and it would still be
easier to clean than most juicers.

Since a VitaMix is expensive, as are good juicers, I would suggest trying to
find someone or some place where you can actually try one before you make a
choice. You may like what the VitaMix produces...or not.

A VitaMix is really just a blender on steroids. Many people love them. It's
a very personal decision.

I like the thick almost-solid liquid, sort-a like a thick milk-shake or soft
ice cream that can be made; you can use a frozen banana and/or any frozen
berries to replace the need for ice. Use yogurt or milk or ice cream to
make any kind of milk-shake.

I also use mine to grind wheat. No problem; it's powerful -- I've had mine
for about 13 years now. I don't use it everyday, but then again, I don't
use all the other appliances I have every day either. If you have room for
it and money to spare, try it. Otherwise, I don't feel it's a necessity,
just like a panini grill isn't a necessity, nor a crockpot, nor ...... and
on and on.

OK thanks

Id like to start making my own juices instead of buying
them as the kinds I buy are expensive

Just sounded neat to throw in some fresh organic
vegetables and make my own juice as needed

It's not juice, tho, as you would think of as apple juice. It's slushly or
sometimes foamy. I have a juicer, but hardly use it -- as you say, with the
vita-mixer, you just 'throw it in.'

Ok but Id think I like the slushier one...such as made
by the VitaMaix

You agree?

Yes, and I like the vita-mix for another reason; it's fast. My juicer takes
forever with caution to clean; others might be better, but I'd never buy
another juicer. Basically I bought one long after I bought the vit-mix just
to see if I would like it for carrots/celery juice. Forget it; I just cook
them and probably loose the vitamins, but I do get the fiber. There is no
reason not to have both, but preferences? I will pick the vitamix -- but it
is actually very expensive.

Ok thanks

I think I will investigate the VitaMix then as I want
home made juice...something easy to clean.... and like
my "juice" thick and kind of chunky with the fiber and
all.

Agree?

Speaking of a blender on steroids, take a look at the Total Blender from
Blendtec! http://www.willitblend.com/videos.aspx?type=unsafe
Absolutely hilarious and awesome! They absolutely nailed it with the
60's/70's instructional video music. I just checked and they have added
a couple of new videos. If you have time, watch them all but I believe
my new favorite is the "Pens" video in which they blend 40 plastic ball
point pens. Although, the "Golf Balls" and "Marbles" are amazing. Oh,
who am I kidding...they're all amazing! Of course, all that power comes
at a price. $399.95. Yikes!

Now that's amazing...That thing is allot more like my old Vita-mix I
bought in the seventies. I never did think the spigot on the side was
a good idea. Watching the videos reminded me of one problem with the
Vita-mix and I'm sure the Total too. They are as loud as an airplane.
If you live in an apartment you won't make your neighbors happy with
these. When I bought my old Vita-Mix they advertised that it had a
router motor (woodworking) in it. That's what it sounds like. If I was
in the market for a Vita-mix I'd take a close look at these Total
Blenders. They are in the same price range...maybe a little cheaper?

Have you tried looking on the net and getting one imported? There are
lots around and a few months ago we bought a Kenwood Smoothie maker.
This is still a bit noisy, but very quick and can chop whole fruit and
ice. I agree with earlier comments on eating the whole fruit and not
just juice. It is also very easy to clean, which is a bonus and has a
tap that is bigg enough for bits to get through, but does not leak. We
don't sell them by the way as they are domestic use, but I can
reccomend it.

VitaMix claims their machine is superior to a juicer because it
liquifies the skin, pulp and seeds that many dedicated juicers leave
behind. The rationale is that there is some amount of food value
discarded along with the pulp.

There's probably some merit to that claim, assuming that the juicer pulp
is indeed thrown out. Or do juicer users find other uses for what's
left behind in the machine?

Hi there, I have two Vitamix and I will never change them for any other
blender. I had tried many blenders and the top of the line is this
one.

If you have no money, you can find a Vitamix pre-owned in any
restaurant supply store, the price must be 50% less. I bought my
second Vitamix for just $ 100 US !!!!! and it was totally new, the
previous owner didn't payed all the restaurant equipment he bought and
then everything was returned back to the supply store as "used
equipment".

Last year in a restaurant trade fair, I looked a competiton between
blenders: Vitamix, Blendtec, Hamilton Beach and others.... The final
result: Vitamix was the blender that can destroy only ice in seconds,
the others even didn't start, their motors were blocked.

Regards from Mexico,

Alex.:

I've had a Vitamix 4000 model for around 20 years now, it's still
going strong and is all original except I replaced the seals for the
action dome top at intervals. The old steel container kinds may be
picked up on eBay for much less than new prices if you are a careful
shopper. I would recommend the 3600 plus or the 4000 models.

If you can get a spigotless container, frankly, I prefer doing without
the spigot myself. Fortunately, I bought myself one way back when,
they are hard to come by now.

As for juice... the Vitamixer will incorporate the pulp, so it will
definitely be slushier but also will provide fiber and nutrition. I
used to use it for making all fruit smoothies, (fruit, ice, a little
water) and they were wonderful!.

These days, I use it more for protein and fruit smoothies.
(water/milk, a little cottage cheese or yogurt, protein powder, fruit,
ice, flax meal/oat bran, nuts)

I was a lot less keen on the Vitamixer for vegetable juice, as most
was too pulpy/foamy for me and I guess I wasn't fond of the recipes.
The instructions did say you could run the "juice" through a sieve or
cheesecloth to squeeze out some pulp for finer juice. Sounded like too
much trouble to me, LOL! So I didn't do much with vegetable juice
after trying it a few times.

I did find that it made wonderful fresh applesauce though!

I also tried a Juiceman juicer not long after I bought the Vitamix
and it was a pain to clean and most of the vegetable came out as pulp,
i.e. you needed a LOT of vegetable to make a very little juice, which
got expensive quick. I returned it in short order! But I kept the
Vitamixer.

The Vitamixer is easy to clean and has multiple uses. I also use mine
regularly to grind my own flax meal. I've also used it to grind
flour... turns rolled oats into oat flour very quickly. Likewise,
wheat berries into whole wheat flour.

I have noticed that now that I have a dishwasher, my old plastic dome
top is developing cracks at a rapid rate... I plan to replace it and
will probably hand wash the new one.

Otherwise, it's a blender built to last. I'd assume the new ones in
plastic would last too, I just like the look of the old metal motor
base and steel container. So if mine ever quite, I'll probably see if
I can find another used on eBay.

I wouldn't be without mine.
