Default Stop the Dinnertime Dread by Planning Your Menu

If you often find yourself dreading the three words "what's for
dinner?" you're not alone. May people struggle with making a plan for
their families every day dinners, shopping for the meals, and then
pulling it all together by 6pm. Trying to think of healthy and
appetizing meals is only the first step. You also have to remember to
get all the needed ingredients and then successfully prepare them,
which is where many home managers struggle.
If you have ever found yourself anxious around 5pm because you forgot
the potatoes you planned on serving with the chicken or just simply
did not plan a meal, you are in need of a little menu planning. Taking
the time to plan out your family's meals and then creating a master
grocery list may be time consuming at first; however being proactive
with your menu will make your weeknights a lot less chaotic and much
more enjoyable.
By planning out what meals you will prepare for your family, you will
not only eliminate the anxiety of figuring out what to serve, you will
also save time and money. Set aside an hour a week to plan the meals
you will be cooking the following week (or two weeks if you want to
really plan ahead). If you dedicate the time to this task alone, you
will be able to be more creative and frugal. Be sure to incorporate
items that are on sale and any coupons you may have. Also, try to
prepare multiple meals out of single items.
For example, use chicken two ways on two different nights or make
baked potatoes one evening and mashed potatoes another. Using the same
ingredients two different ways will allow you to buy these items in
bulk which will in turn save you money on your grocery bill.
Purchasing items in bulk is much more cost effective than purchasing
in smaller quantities. In addition to purchasing in bulk, you can save
money by planning to cook what is in season. Seasonal fruits and
vegetables are much cheaper than their out of season counterparts.
Also, by consciously creating a dinner menu, you will be able to eat a
bit healthier. Taking the time to focus on what your family will be
eating will result in much more health conscious decisions than
"whipping" something up at the last minute would. Also, if you have a
meals planned for every night, you family will spend less time in the
drive thru line and more time around the dinner table together which
is a much healthier way to eat.
Keep in mind that every family's needs are different so one might
enjoy planning their menu one week at a time, others in two week
increments- while a very busy family might find it useful to plan a
month's worth of dinners. If your goal is to eliminate your evening
frenzy to get dinner on the table, then taking the time to plan your
dinner menu is a great solution. Investing an hour a week and planning
next week's menu will result in less time spent in the kitchen, more
money in your pocketbook, and healthy meals on your dinner table.
