Dear fellow winers
Can I get a recommend for vines and rootstocks for Austin Texas or more specifically Dripping Springs area. This hi-tek migrant laborer had to sell his house in central California but doesn't want to give up on the vineyard. My preference is for reds but if there's a particularly suited white I'd be interested too. Vinifera is prefered but I have read Pierce disease is a problem out here and so might consider a hybrid. Yee-Har! Chris |

There are also a couple near Natural Bridge Caverns north of San Antonio. Unlike California most of the Tasting is free, and you could just slip in a little vine stock talk while your at it. When I asked about grapes/juice in Fredricksburg they kind of turned up there nose at me though. I don't think Fredricksburg is more than an hour from Dripping springs... Bring the wife she will like all the shops in Fredricksburg, and go to the micro(mini?) brewery and try some ales and the Beer garden across from the Pacific War Museum. (can you tell I'm a beer guy?? <grin>) ET - (NOT a wine expert... on my 3rd & forth winexpert kits) |

I was GREATLY surprised that anyone could grow ANY type of wine grape there. The wines were actually pretty darn good - besides they have a tasting room cutie ![]() you should be able to do even better near Austin. |

Touch base with your local ag. agent. He can probably help. If nothing
else, he should be able to put you in contact with some of the wine groups in Texas. Thanks for the feedback. Of course the idea of driving out to
Fredericksberg and tasting and talking appeals to me most. I think there may be another issue out in Dripping Springs, There a lot of deer. This is going to be insteresting. How 'bout those wild grape vines that seem to be quite successful in the area? Perhaps that's a good source of root stock . . . Thanks, Chris |
