Default TN: 2 Pinot Noirs, 2 Rieslings

Tuesday was scallops in* a red curry/basil sauce, Japanese brown rice
with furikake, and salad. Wine was the 2008 Schafer Frohlich Riesling
Kabinett. Lovely light to midbodied Riesling, peaches and a little
tropical note, moderate sweetness, good acids. B+

Wednesday we had brisket, giant potato pancake, applesauce, and
salad. I actually thought of Riesling again, but wanted red, and tried
the 1979 Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin I'd had standing up a couple of
weeks (this was a real cheap buy, I knew a longshot, but I've had such
good luck with other '79 Drouhin- albeit farther up the hierarchy, I
chanced it). A bit of ye olde stank, plus some VA when opened (so I
quickly opened backup bottle). By dinner the stink has subsided and
some red fruit appeared, but it was outweighed by the tea, forest
floor, and ashtray aromas. Unfortunately the latter dominated, and I
passed on drinking with meal. About 2 hours later I revisited- more
fruit, more autumn leaves, less ashtray. Not great but a drinkable
geriatic Burg. It was totally undrinkable by day 2 of course. But at
9:30 PM it was a B- on my easy scale (probably C/C+ at dinner, D on
day 2), makes me wonder what it would have been like at midnight (or
8:30, or 11).

Backup was the 2007 Coelho "Paciencia" Pinot Noir. Raspberries and
cranberries, good acidity (almost shrill), a hint of heat though it
says 13%. Seems a bit more attractive when it settles down a bit. B-

With leftovers, the 2009 Shafer-*Frohlich*"Medium Dry" Riesling.
Just a little sugar, bright tangerine and apple fruit, nice length. I
like this B+/B*

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent
wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't
drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no
promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.*
