I confess. I succumbed to temptation. Please don't blow my cover.

Based on comments here in the group, I sought out Rex Goliath "47
Pound Rooster" Pinot Noir at my local wine shop. It was, as promised,
just $5.99 a bottle. I bought a case. I bought a case of Chardonnay as
well--same outrageous price.

Pulled a cork on the PN tonight. Surprise! It's good. It's dark,
almost black cherry in color. None of that strawberry kool-aid swill
that characterizes flaccid PN's at low price. It's got a nice warm
nose with black cherry, leather and toasty vanilla notes. It's smooth
on the tongue, not watery but with some body. The flavors that you
smell come through in taste.

If there's a shortfall (how can there be a shortfall at
$5.99/bottle?????) it might be a somewhat short finish. Not abrupt,
just not as long as you might expect if blind tasting and you'd
already mis-identified this as a Russian River offering or even
something from the Cote d'Or.

I think I'll go back tomorrow and buy a case of the merlot and
whatever other varietals they have. This is good stuff!

Hi Ed,
I guess I'm the one who started the thread, and it was only a
fluke. My favorite liquor store recently published its fall
sale catalog. I perused, picked out some wines, and then gave the
catalog to my wife. She spotted the 47 Pound Rooster and suggested
we try some. We did, posted a favorable amateur TN to AFW, and went
back the next day to purchase more bottles. This is one of the wines
we'll be serving at Thanksgiving. Glad you enjoy it!

BTW - here's the web site if you're interested.

And, now for the rest of the story. My local wine emporium is having
Rex Goliath (all types) on sale this week for $4.99/bottle. I see
several cases in my future.

Hope you bought a truckload! I have enough to last until
"the cows come home" or "the chickens come home to roost",
hopefully these events won't occur in my yard. :-)

Hey Larry,
It's good, but I don't know if it's that good! I'd love to ship you
a bottle, but I don't know if I would get into trouble with the
FBI, USPS, or RCMP. Maybe I could ship it as a 750ML bottle of ...
perfume? Let me check on this (seriously!).

Well, I was waiting for the proverbial "offer you can't refuse..."

He suggested "two ? for one Goliath." so I was thinking in terms of
maybe a Rochioli PN, or a Turley Zin, or maybe a first growth Bdx.
Given the right offer, running a risk with the FBI, USPS or even
Dudley DoRight of the RCMP, would be minor. I'm thinking the shipment
might go as "computer software" based on the origin through Usenet.

Now Ed is my kinda guy.

But it probably would be a tricky thing to send here. A 5.99 bottle
might not be worth life in prison though ;-) just to be some guys
wife and not have any wine at all.

I grew up in Chicago--not the suburbs, the city. I knows about dem
offers. And, hey, if you're connected, youse don't gotta worry about
dem short terms in da joint....nobuddy gonna mess wid'chu.

Seriously, though, the Rex Rooster is amazing in the PN iteration. I'm
going to pull a cork on the Merlot tonight with a bit of pasta. Will
report later.

Hi again Ed,
I was born in Chicago, but we didn't do dems and that stuff. My folks
were Swedish. Moved to Minnesota when I was a child, but I still have
vivid memories (and 8mm film) of Chicago landmarks that probably aren't
there anymore.

Looking forward to your TNs on the 47 Pound Merlot.

Dick
