Any NYC folks here? If so ...
Hi all,
My wife and some gal friends will be spending a few nights at the Wellington hotel on 7th and 55th in NYC. My wife has been checking the web for nearby places to eat and has discovered the high prices seem very unreasonable to us folks in the Midwest. Any suggestions as to places where the locals eat, and where a cheeseburger and fries doesn't cost $30. All suggestions appreciated, Dick R. |

I'm not NYC, but suburbs. You're right by Carneigie Hall, so immediate vicinity tends toward high. Although expensive by Greek standards, Molyvos is in your hotel: excellent high end Greek with lots of interesting choices on wine list. But for nonsplurge eating, the simple thing to do is walk west to 9th Ave, turn left. You'll have lots of interesting choices. A few I like are Afghan kebab House, Hallo Berlin, Uncle Nicks, Bali Indah Nusah. I don't usually travel to city for burgers, but sure to be plenty of places on 9th , I just don't pay attention. Afghan Kebab is a particular favorite, small, but good food (grilled kebabs and other meats, great samosa-like pumpkin appetizers) and NO corkage fee. As I said, I don't really know burgers (love them, but don't travel to city for them) but can ask some friends at an offline Th night for ideas. When are you coming, and any fun plans? |

Hi Dale. Thanks for the tips. I just used the burger and fries as an example of some of the high prices in NYC. This trip is girls only, so I'll have to stay home and hold down the fort. They'll be leaving in a couple of weeks. Dick R. |

If there are any particular ethnic faves, I'd be happy to make suggestions. Or for other neighborhoods if they know some activities they'll be doing elsewhere. But in that neighborhood (my parents have stayed at the Wellington, and my brother always stays at the Sheraton a couple blocks down), the moneysaving advice is always walk west to 9th. One of the most active restaurant strips in city, and far cheaper than Times Sq stuff just a block east (7th Ave, Broadway, and to a lesser extent 8th). There are a couple outlier places on 10th and 11th, but some of the crossstreets are long "industrial" blocks and they might not feel comfortable on some. But walk from 7th to 9th in 40s and 50s is generallyl busy and inviting. |

If you don't know person, hard to judge if their tastes might follow yours (plus there's a lot of fake/sock puppet puffery, and I wouldn't doubt some tearing down of competition)l. |

Hi Dick, my Dad lives in the Alwyn Court building on the corner of 58th and 7th. I haven't spent much time in the neighborhood in a while, but I can give you a few meager tips. First, avoid "Petrosian" in my Dad's building. (But it's worth looking at from the outside, very pretty.) The Carnegie Deli is best late at night, they used to stay open 24h, not sure if it's still the case. Wolf's on 58th and 6th was good, I'm afraid it's gone. There's a good cafe/diner (and cheap) on IIRC 56th at 9th. Decent chinese over on 11th. There's a good bar on 7th right between 57th and 58th towards the west, very west side especially after hours. Burgers are reasonable. I used to eat at Le Parisian, a greek joint next door, but got miffed when the counterman Jack retired. I go to Hama's for sushi, it's around 55th between 6th and 5th. There are a number of decent restos on 48th street between 8th and 9th. Here's a tip: walk in at the stage door of Carnegie, wearing a tuxedo, and don't forget to say hello to the guard. Walk upstairs and into the main hall, you may need to sit on a step, but you can see just about anything gratis! You can leave through the main entrance... -E |

www.Restaurant.com offers lots of discounts but I think you have to
prepay and it's only for some days/times (like probably not Friday nor Saturday nights). If you give us an idea of what type of food they're looking for we could give more help. Shaun Eli www.BrainChampagne.com |
