Default TN: 2005 DeMoor Chablis

After an evening spent toiling in the backyard in muggy weather to get
ready for fence installers and garage painters, Jean and I decided that
a glass or two of a chilled white wine was in order to restore some
sense of relaxation to the evening. So, with a perfunctory snack of
assorted rice crackers, I opened the only chilled white in the house:

2005 DeMoor Chablis 'Bel Air et Clardy'
color: fairly intense golden yellow
nose: initially, stones and lemons, turning more minerally with time
palate: initially rather tight, with a tart finish, but after half an
hour's time it had fleshed out nicely with some green apple and mineral
notes, medium body and crisp finish

This is a wine that'll benefit from some age and also pair nicely with
fish of all sorts. Given the constraints of the evening, it was still a
nice experience. This was my first encounter with this producer and I
came away quite impressed.

Mark
a mate was down in Beaune a few weeks ago and brought me case of Chablis
Alain Gautheron, Les Fourneaux 2005.

had a bottle last week, a real stunner, still unknit but a pale bright gold,
steely nose and full fruit, long.

also tried Leflaive Rully 1cru 2005, again magic for a simple wine, so fat
on the palate, almost unctous.

If the rest of my 2005's white burgs are like this then I am a happy man

JT, from a very wet UK, the weather is awful and this present storm has come
up from France, I feel there will be hardly any decent wine produced in
France in 2007.

The rain radar over champagne look awful and I suspect Emery Davies is
getting clobbered as well

Too right. Bloody cold, too.

What's the price range on the Gautheron? Their web site gives nothing away.
Pretty sure I've tried at one of the Salons, though.

Thanks. Sounds like it might be worth a go.

Hmmm... Another new name. Do let us know what you think of it, John. I
confess to having been pretty much a one trick pony when it came to
Chablis: René (and later Vincent) Dauvissat. And, while I still love
their wines, their pricing here in the US leaves me in search of other
producers. Fortunately, it appears that there's a bit of a renaissance
occuring there. My short list of quality producers includes Picq,
Brocard, Boudin, Lavantereux, Fevre and now DeMoor. If Gautheron pans
out for you, I'll gladly add him to the list.

That's bad news on all fronts, John, except that my wine budget in '10
may be the better for it.
