carbon dioxide and animals eaten
Writing in july Physics World, British physicist Alan Calvert
calculated that the animals eaten by people produce 21 per cent of the carbon dioxide that can be attributed to human activity. Where can I find this article? I'd like to read it but there's no trace of it on Physics World web site. Anybody can help? Thanks Aldo |

That's the view of British physicist Alan Calverd, who thinks that giving up pork chops, lamb cutlets and chicken burgers would do more for the environment than burning less oil and gas. Writing in this month's Physics World, Calvert calculates that the animals we eat emit 21% of all the carbon dioxide that can be attributed to human activity. We could therefore slash man-made emissions of carbon dioxide simply by abolishing all livestock. Moreover, there would be no adverse effects to health and it would be an experiment that we could abandon at any stage. "Worldwide reduction of meat production in the pursuit of the targets set in the Kyoto treaty seems to carry fewer political unknowns than cutting our consumption of fossil fuels," he says. and http://www.farmingviews.co.uk/landwr...r.asp?aId=5645 Gives this snippet: GO VEGGIE TO SAVE THE WORLD, SAYS BOFFIN A scientist has claimed that if mankind turned vegetarian, it would do more to cut greenhouse gas emissions than any measures to reduce fossil fuel use. Alan Calverd stresses he is not a vegetarian himself , nor is he convinced that CO2 emissions are entirely responsible for climate change, but he argues that livestock reared to be eaten produce 21 per cent of the carbon dioxide attributed to humans. He says vegetarianism has no adverse health effects and his proposal required no new technology. And he points out that scrapping livestock farming would free up huge areas of farmland which could be used to produce biofuels to further cut C02 emissions. "A worldwide reduction of meat production in the pursuit of the targets set in the Kyoto treaty seems to carry fewer political unknowns than cutting our consumption of fossil fuels," he says. "It also appears to offer genuine benefits. "Moreover, it is a simple reversible experiment that can be initiated by redirecting agricultural policies and subsidies, monitored in real time, and abandoned at any stage." He adds that it takes about 60 per cent less land to produce a given quantity of fat and protein from plants than from animals, and without livestock production, the world would be in food surplus. carbon dioxide and animals eaten
It seems that livestock are a significant contributor to CO2 emissions.
Does anyone know if wild animals or grass fed cattle are an equally significant contributor or whether breeding or unnatural diets are responsible? |
