Default Question about tea plantation

Dear all RFDT reader:

Day after tomorrow, I invite over a very experienced tea planter in my
house for dinner. He has been worked for British Tea company- "Finley
tea" almost twenty one years. Do you have any question about tea
plantation? Just let me know, I will pass it to him for you.

Thank you Ripon for this chance. Can I first ask you where Finley's
plantation is?

Livio:

Finley was a multinational British company, recently acquired by
another multinational British company. But haven't change the name for
Finley's long time reputation. Mr.Asfaqqudin Ahmed also left the day
Finley was acuired. He retired and spending his time writing and
consulting.

Finley's plantation is located in Sylhet,Bangladesh(border with
Assam,India). Their garden is one of the oldest and largest in
bangladesh.

My question would be, where can one purchse tea trees (bushes?) and if
there is a particular cultivar we should be looking for?

Thanks!

Sorry, very busy these days. Am I still in time to ask something about the
plants used in the area where he worked: which cultivar are themt? where did
they first get them from? do they also have their own nursery for sprouts?
the start and end of the picking season? which kind of pest control?

Dear RFDT friends:

Today me and Mr. Ahmed talked a lot about tea plantation. He is a very
nice man and never feels tired to talk about tea. I explained him
about our tea mail group and RFDT group. Though he is a very busy
traveling kind of person but he gave us a week to prepare our
questions and kindly agreed to come over next weekend to my house
for a small evening tea party. I have received question from Michael
after he left. So we have a whole week(*) to prepare our question. And
for your information- Bangladesh is almost 12 hours ahead of US time.
(*) By the way weekend in Bangladesh is Friday not Saturday. That's
means we have six days. Thanks.

Hi Ripon

I'd apreciate to know why tea is (as far as i know) planted just up the
slope (like wine) and not on terraces. Is there an actual reason to do
so, or is it just the way it is traditionally grown?

Or am I completely wrong and there also are plantations that use
terraces for their plants? Then: On which basis does one decide whether
to grow the tea on terraces rather than on the slope?

thanks
Patrick
