Why do you want to sterilize your crock?

How about a bleach solution? Homebrewers have been using bleach for
years--about 1 ounce of bleach to 1 gallon of water (though some
instructions call for 2 ounces of bleach per gallon), soaking for about
10 minutes. In addition, I used to boil up a gallon or so of water,
letting it boil for 10 minutes, and use that water to rinse out the
bucket after emptying out the bleach solution.

You can also use iodine solutions (Iodophor--what I ended up using) or
other sanitizers, available from homebrew supply shops.

I don't don't think that even boiling qualifies as "sterilization"--that
would require an autoclave--but it is sanitization.

Hydrogen peroxide.
Leaves no nasty chemical residues in the crock.

Neither does bleach, it vapors off in the sunshine so after cleaning set
it out for an hour. It will disappear inside in less than five minutes
too. Plain old detergent doesn't leave any residues if you rinse it well.
