True story: when the kid was small, we hid eggs in the house for him to find
Easter morning. One year we didn't find one. Later that year, I found it
moving furniture. It cracked. It smelled nothing but nuclear disaster.
Whatever you do - don't let it crack.
If I want to decorate and save eggs now, I drain the eggs for scrambled
thru pin holes at either end. Rinse & dry eggs, then decorate empty eggs,
putting beads around the holes. Never any smell.

If they are already boiled and decorated, you might try dipping them in
clear polyurethane, letting dry, and coating again a few times. Or in
melted parrafin wax. In either case, if they crack at all you will
experience the scent of rotten eggs. Be careful!

Next time, blow the egg out of the shell before decorating or use wooden
eggs from a craft shop.

If the shell is intact they'll be fine at room temp. The inside will
eventually dehydrate. I'm more familiar with keeping raw eggs, but have
one that was hard-cooked. If there's any kind of flaw in the shell,
well, you'll eventually smell it.
