Default Computer in the kitchen

I don't see a good reason for a computer to be in the kitchen.

That's just silly

And yet I find having my laptop on the kitchen table quite handy. While
I'm overseeing some cooking on the stove or in the oven, I can be doing
something close by on the computer also. My recipe program is on this
laptop and I just take it to the counter nearby and have the recipe at
hand without having to print it out.

I can see how it can be. I may be relegating an ancient IBM Thinkpad
(125PII, .4G HDD!) to recipe duty. I have a couple hundred recipes
on my desktop and this old IBM is not much good for anything else
other than a portable database.

It's also fun to have one handy (especially a laptop) if you like to
chat on IRC while cooking. I often had my laptop in the kitchen on a
counter for just this purpose. Especially when we have cook-alongs.

Plus, I don't think IRC uses too many computer resources..so your
Thinkpad might also be good for chatting in the channel.

It would be just fine, if....

If I had wifi
If it had an NIC
If I had room on the counter
If I .....

Seriously, I don't even know if they made ethernet NICs for this
fossil. It has a pcmcia slot, but who knows what version. The model
I have seems to be the only Thinkpad one IBM feels is not worth
archiving the manual for. Info on this thing is almost nonexistent.
But, it works, and quite well surprisingly. I'm trying to find a
wallwart for the aftermarket remote CD drive I have for it. I'd like
to put Linux on it, if possible. It's an IBM 365X if that means
anything to anyone.

To each his own. I'd rather have that 1/2 cup of olive oil spill on my
printout than my keyboard.

I'm lucky in that I have enough counter space to afford the lap top a
counter of its own while I work at other spaces.

But it's got good knife technique...

Yes, of course it is. So is cooking when Mickey-D's
is just down the street to overwhelm your nutritional
needs, in seconds, for nickels.

But my computer is smart enough not to go there.

I don't see a good reason for people to denigrate other people's
choices, but hey, we can't all get what we want.

Are you kidding? That's been standard in RFC for at least the 5 years I've
been lurking.

Didn't say it doesn't happen. Said I don't see a good reason for it.

ObFood: I made beer bread with garlic and basil today. Yummy.
