All the same, I can't understand why you would want to go out and pay a fortune for grilled steak with bog standard accompaniments when you can do it yourself at home. If I'm eating out I want to go somewhere with a kitchen brigade to peel the grapes, or bone the whiting from the inside like they do at mecca. Christine |

Have to agree. The meat is OK, but the bog standard jacket potato with
greasy bacon bits(whatever they are!), and very average over-dressed salad, all spilling off the side of your plate isn't terribly appetizing. They always seem to have the most anaemic tomatoes too. Oh, and how could I forget the mushroom sauce in a plastic cup that looks, and I imagine tastes, like powdered cream of mushroom soup that's been reduced till it's got the viscosity of flem; the chilli one isn't much better. It's the same set-up as the Brekkie Creek: http://www.breakfastcreekhotel.com/, although it's had a bit of a face lift in recent years and looks nicer than the Norman now. I'm being a bit harsh though. It's good for pub food and a jug of amber can transform the average meal into the sublime; I think that's what they bank on, the cunning devils. I found out the hard way the *******s stop serving at 9 on a Saturday night though, in fact, it might've even been 8. I think they're losing out on a big night-munchie market there. Generally speaking I don't mind ordering a steak in a restaurant though, especially if it has a nice jus and properly cooked and seasoned veges. Not many people would go to the trouble of making a demi-glace from beef bones, aromats, etc. and cooking it for hours, so if you like to order things that take effort, you can still order a steak and console yourself that way. ![]() "Old Mother Ashby" > wrote in message ... > All the same, I can't understand why you would want to go out and pay a > fortune for grilled steak with bog standard accompaniments when you can do > it yourself at home. I'm talking about mecca (sic) in Melbourne (Cath Claringbould's original venture). They have from time to time this extraordinary dish which involves fairly simple ingredients (fish, mashed potato, parsley and tomato salad) but you'd never do it yourself. There's a whole whiting on the plate, but you can eat it like a sausage because all the bones have been removed from the inside, presumably by somebody with tremendous dexterity and a magnifying glass! I went fishing with a couple of mates in a boat off the Gold Coast one night. We rendevouzed with a trawler, out in the middle of *no-where* on the other side of Sth Straddie, in the middle of the damn night!! Hopped on board the trawler just after they had done a run and had emptied their nets and were sorting. There was about 40 dolphins all swimming around the back of the boat in the glaring floodlights that they had on. The catch was whiting. They packaged them up and I thought, "You beauty... I'll be able to score a box of whiting here!!". Nope. It was all being sold to Vietnam. The Vietnamese then either filleted or deboned the fish and then sold it back to Australia!! Apparently it's cheaper doing it like that than it is to process it here in Oz :-/ -- Peter Lucas Brisbane Australia At this spectacle even the most gentle must feel savage, and the most savage must weep. I repeat, I'm talking about *mecca* (yes, the first letter is lower case). It's a restaurant located at the Southgate complex. The Melbourne Mecca Bah is in Docklands, designed for the yuppies. Completely different setup, run by the same people. It's the sort of place where one goes when one wishes to treat oneself and one's partner to a night out. http://www.mecca.net.au/ Christine |

I wasn't meaning to denigrate people who go to Vlado's, far from it though I wouldn't go there myself partly because it's blokey and also because I'd never be able to do justice to the serves. It gets a bit difficult communicating with Peter, as you see, given his isolation in the Deep North (consider the recent confusion over mecca/Mecca Bah). We've got lots of pubs like the Norman in Melbourne and I would never suggest anybody go anywhere near them, but I presume that in Brisbane there's no alternative. Poor Peter would probably freak out completely at Vlado's! Christine |
