TEFLON CHEMICAL GONE BY 2015 Friday, January 27, 2006 - FreeMarketNews.com Eight U.S. companies, including DuPont Co., agreed Wednesday to eliminate the harmful chemical perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) used to make the nonstick material Teflon from all consumer products. PFOA has been linked to cancer, birth defects in animals and is in the blood of 95 percent of Americans. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) crafted the voluntary pact, which will force companies to reduce manufacturing of PFOA by 95 percent no later than 2010, according to The Washington Post and other reports. In addition, companies will have to reduce trace amounts in consumer products, such as pizza boxes, microwave popcorn bags, and nonstick pans, by 95 percent over the same period and virtually eliminate PFOA by 2015. This moves comes one month after a €13.52 ($16.5) million DuPont settlement with the EPA after the company refused to disclose possible health risks associated with PFOA. An independent federal scientific advisory board will soon recommend whether the government should classify PFOA as a "likely" or "probable" carcinogen in humans. This could trigger a new set of federal regulations in the future. Click Here For The Full Story X'Posted to: sci.med.nutrition,rec.food.cooking |
